Wizards of the Coast Parts Ways with Giant Skull on D&D Action Game, Future Uncertain

Wizards of the Coast dropped an early D&D action game concept from Giant Skull studio, raising concerns about the future of the IP's video game adaptations. Meanwhile, Invoke Studios' D&D action RPG remains shrouded in silence.

Wizards of the Coast has reportedly decided not to pursue an early concept from Giant Skull , the studio founded by God of War director David Jaffe.

The project, which was an early take on a Dungeons & Dragons action game, apparently did not align with the direction Wizards wanted for the IP. Sources suggest that the split was amicable, but it raises red flags about the future of D&D video games. Giant Skull may be a new studio, but its team boasts an impressive track record of beloved action games.

Jaffe himself has developed iconic titles like God of War and Twisted Metal, so the potential for an amazing D&D action game was high. The concept reportedly emphasized immersive storytelling, heroic combat, and exhilarating traversal, moving away from the turn-based CRPG format of Baldur's Gate 3. This news comes as a disappointment to fans who were hoping for a narrative-driven single-player action title set in the D&D universe.

Meanwhile, another D&D action RPG is in development at Invoke Studios, an in-house studio under Wizards of the Coast. That game, originally teased for Summer 2026, received its first teaser trailer at The Game Awards in late 2025. It is described as a third-person action-adventure RPG where players take on the role of a Warlock. This is quite different from the party-based CRPG that Baldur's Gate 3 popularized.

However, Invoke Studios has been quiet since the teaser, and with only a vague 2027 release window, the silence is beginning to concern fans. The upcoming Summer Game Fest season could be the perfect opportunity for Wizards to show more, especially after the Giant Skull project was scrapped. But if no new information emerges, it may signal trouble for Invoke's game as well.

The decision to drop Giant Skull's concept might stem from a desire to avoid overlap with Invoke's project or simply to focus resources internally. Wizards of the Coast has been cautious about how to build on the success of Baldur's Gate 3, which set a high bar for D&D games.

The pivot to a single-player action game with a focused protagonist-like a Warlock-could offer a deep dive into a specific class, exploring its lore and abilities in a way that Baldur's Gate 3's open party system did not. However, the lack of clarity on both projects suggests possible choice paralysis within Wizards. With Summer Game Fest approaching, fans are hopeful for signs of life from Invoke's game.

If the silence continues, it will be a worrying sign for the future of D&D action games. For now, the industry watches closely, hoping that the Giant Skull cancellation is not a precursor to further setbacks
