The Mandalorian and Grogu's 'Modernized' Music: A Bold Bet on the Future of Star Wars

Exploring The Mandalorian and Grogu's deliberate departure from tradition through its soundtrack, which contrasts with the nostalgia-driven installments of the past.

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for The Mandalorian and Grogu. The Mandalorian and Grogu has finally arrived in theaters, and while it mostly didn't break the mold in terms of Star Wars movies and TV shows that have come before, there was one surprising change that the movie made.

The Mandalorian and Grogu has been a major update to the Star Wars franchise already. For one, this movie represents the first time one of Star Wars' TV shows has made the jump to the big screen, which in and of itself was a monumental change.

In terms of Star Wars movies, this was also a significant and unique installment, in part because this is Star Wars' first new movie in seven years, and in part because it represents a true departure from the Skywalker Saga—arguably a first in the larger Star Wars franchise. Yes, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Solo: A Star Wars Story technically fell outside the Skywalker Saga, but both also felt very tied to it; the former led directly into A New Hope, and the latter was all about Han Solo, a hero of the original trilogy.

The Mandalorian and Grogu, a movie centered on a Mandalorian bounty hunter and his newly adopted Force-sensitive son, was therefore something completely new in the franchise, and it had to chart its own course in various ways. However, one particularly notable deviation is undoubtedly going to prove controversial, even though, given this context, it was the right call.

The Mandalorian And Grogu Had Modern, Non-John Williams Inspired Music Although John Williams' music has been a fundamental part of Star Wars for decades, dating all the way back to the original trilogy, the music in The Mandalorian and Grogu did not incorporate those scores. In fact, unlike many of the scores in the franchise that weren't done by Williams himself, the music in The Mandalorian and Grogu doesn't even seem inspired by Williams' classic Star Wars songs.

If anything, the movie actually seemed to intentionally differentiate itself from what's been done before. There is one scene in particular in which Din Djarin is walking through a market early in The Mandalorian and Grogu, in which the music playing in the background is quite different from anything heard before in Star Wars—even including the range of music heard in cantinas over the years.

This song could actually be described as modernized, which is a significant departure from the soundtracks of Star Wars movies and shows past. This choice is no doubt going to prove controversial, but the truth is, this decision actually makes a lot of sense, and it represents the types of decisions that Star Wars is going to have to make moving forward.

Star Wars Has To Move On Eventually As painful as it might be to hear, it is more than time for Star Wars to move on and be truly innovative, and that is inevitably going to mean breaking with tradition, be it John Williams' music, the Skywalker family, or countless other aspects of the franchise that have existed for almost 50 years. This is, in fact, the constant push and pull of Star Wars and its fanbase.

Nostalgic fans struggle to let go of the past, while others want to see Star Wars break the mold and prove that these movies and shows have an exciting future. Even as newer projects, from The Mandalorian to Andor and many in between, have introduced a host of new characters and concepts, the shows and movies that have been released over the last decade or so have still relied heavily on cameos from fan-favorite characters and callbacks to the original and prequel trilogies.

Perhaps now, with this controversial music decision, The Mandalorian and Grogu represents Star Wars' attempts to actually move on. 7.6/10 7/10 The Mandalorian and Grogu 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed PG-13 Sci-Fi Adventure Action Release Date May 22, 2026 Runtime 132 Minutes Director Jon Favreau Writers Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Noah Kloor Producers Ian Bryce, Jon Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy Cast See All Prequel The Mandalorian Sequel Dave Filoni's Untitled Mandalorian Movie Franchise Star Wars Powered by Expand Collapse
