ODOT’s newest traffic study near I-71 and I-271 suggests changes to streets around the highways will improve traffic congestion.
MEDINA COUNTY, Ohio - ODOT ’s newest traffic study near I-71 and I-271 suggests changes to streets around the highways will improve traffic congestion.
“We’re going to spend our time focusing on the local roadways: on the State Route 3 corridor and the State Route 94 corridors,” ODOT spokesperson Crystal Neelon said. The feasibility study began in 2023 in response to multiple requests from Medina County drivers to consider additional ramps to connect interstates 71 and 271 in more directions. The studies included an analysis of traffic and crash data, as well as an assessment of both community and environmental impacts.
“We learned that adding those lanes would only divert a small portion of traffic,” Neelon said. “We would still see the traffic concerns on State Route 3 and State Route 94. ” ODOT’s study recommended multiple projects on local streets instead; they include road widenings, dedicated turn lanes, and roundabouts.
“They keep traffic moving,” Neelon explained. “You’re forced to slow down when you go through a roundabout...and it’s going to reduce the severity of accidents if they do happen. ”So far, only the SR-94 and SR-3 roundabout has the necessary funding—construction will likely not begin until 2031. While not the changes drivers originally expected, Neelon is confident Medina County will appreciate and of the changes that end up becoming a reality.
