Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed franchise has long focused on historical events and settings, but some fans are theorizing that Ancient Rome could be the next setting explored. However, there are concerns due to the sheer size and diversity of Ancient Rome.
Since its inception back in 2007, the Assassin's Creed franchise has taken us through all different eras of history, from the Italian Renaissance period to the Ptolemaic period, Victorian London to Ancient Greece.
For many of us, the Ubisoft franchise was our introduction to the history of the world, allowing us to experience new cultures, time periods, and historical events. Most recently, the Assassin's Creed franchise took us to late-16th-century feudal Japan in Assassin's Creed Shadows, whilst the next mainline entry, Assassin's Creed Hexe, will see us step into the shoes of a witch during the Holy Roman Empire.
In the middle of that, we will be returning to the Caribbean during the Golden Age of Piracy with Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag Resynced, a remake of 2013's Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. So, put simply, it is an exciting time to be a fan of the beloved Ubisoft franchise.
However, with the Assassin's Creed franchise expected to continue until time infinitum, fans have already begun speculating as to where the future will take us, and it seems as though Ancient Rome is one such suggestion.
"An Ancient Rome AC game, thoughts? " One user asked over on r/assassinscreed. "What do you think would be the best time period for Ancient Rome in an AC game? I was thinking the Spartacus Revolt and the Third Serville War, but that happened in 80-70 BC, so before Origins.
Then I thought about around the time of Constantine and the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. Or to milk most of the Roman Emperors the time of the emperors after Caesar Augustus, from like 15 AD to 60 AD. This time period would deal with Jesus Christ, who could be mentioned throughout the game but never show up.
" As we all know, there were quite a few major events which took place during Ancient Rome, some of which could be covered in an Assassin's Creed entry. We may have got close to these time periods, but Ubisoft has yet to explore Ancient Rome in detail. In another Reddit thread, it seems as though another user has the same question, asking,"Does anyone know if Ubisoft has plans for an AC game set in Ancient Rome?
I was absolutely obsessed with AC Odyssey mainly because of its setting, and I think a game set in Rome would be just amazing. Has anyone heard anything or am I just hoping for no reason?
" It was the top comment that summed up what we know about a potential Ancient Rome setting. "There were some rumors a few years back that there was a Rome game in the works that was canceled because the executive producer, Serge Hascoet, felt it was too similar to Odyssey. As of right now, there is no Rome game in the works.
" Not only that, but another user pointed out quite a major concern, saying,"“Ancient Rome” covers a time period of about 1,000 years or more. Good luck picking a setting and location that will appease your player base when everyone is going to want to see a different event... Due to the sheer size of the empire, much of its most important history happened outside the actual city, often in far-flung places like Gaul, North Africa, Egypt, or Syria.
In the later centuries of the empire, Rome wasn’t even the capital.

However, if anybody could achieve an Ancient Rome setting, it is Ubisoft, and so, hopefully, the future of the beloved franchise will give the fans what they want. In the meantime, there are plenty of Assassin's Creed entries to look forward to.
