Three teenage boys who were spared jail after raping two schoolgirls in separate attacks in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, are facing increased sentences after a public outcry. The Attorney General has referred their sentences to the Court of Appeal for review.
Public outcry has forced the Attorney General to refer the sentences of three teenage boys who were spared jail after raping two schoolgirls in separate attacks to the Court of Appeal.
The two girls, aged 14 and 15 at the time, were raped by two 14-year-old boys weeks apart in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, with a then-13-year-old also convicted over his role in the second incident. Despite the horrific nature of the attacks, all three were handed youth rehabilitation orders and walked free from court. The decision sparked outrage and multiple referrals to the Attorney General under the unduly lenient scheme, after the judge praised the boys for their conduct during trial.
The outcome of the review, announced by the Prime Minister, is that the Court of Appeal will now consider whether the boys' sentences should be increased, meaning they could be handed prison time
