Over 700 lightning strikes reported during thunderstormsTracking power outages and thunderstormsSevere storms knock out power for thousands of Houston-area customers Tens of thousands of Houston-area residents woke up Saturday without power after a round of severe thunderstorms tore through the region overnight.
The latest numbers tell two very different stories. CenterPoint Energy has made some progress, dropping from more than 21,000 outages to 18,654 customers still in the dark. Entergy, on the other hand, is moving in the wrong direction — outages nearly doubled, jumping from 6,263 to 12,292 customers without power. The storms packed a punch overnight, generating more than 700 lightning strikes alongside rumbling thunder in the early morning hours.
And the rough weather isn’t done yet. Meteorologists at KPRC2 are tracking the storms throughout Memorial Day weekend, and Houston is under a flood watch through Memorial Day Monday. After days of heavy rain this week, flash flooding is the biggest concern heading into the holiday. Copyright 2026 by KPRC Click2Houston - All rights reserved.
