Compared and Contrasted: Powerful Entities in Tolkien's Middle-Earth
LiteratureWorldbuildingGandalf

The article explores the power dynamics between Gandalf and other iconic characters from Tolkien's Middle-Earth, detailing their strengths, weaknesses, and how they compare in terms of power, as determined by Tolkien's legendarium.

Gandalf is one of the most universally beloved characters in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. He's mainly loved for his humor, sage wisdom, and surprising battle prowess.

First written about by British author J. R. R. Tolkien, the wizard belongs to the race of Maiar, demigod-like beings that inhabit Middle-Earth. He is commonly seen aiding the heroes on their journey against the Dark Lord Sauron. While Gandalf is exceptionally powerful, being a wizard and all, he wasn't the single most powerful entity that Tolkien ever wrote about.

In fact, there were several that outranked or even matched Gandalf's power, some of whom were on the wizard's side, some of whom were not. These are the few beings that were actually more powerful than Gandalf, and that would probably beat him in a fight. 10 Gothmog Gothmog is the chieftain of the Balrogs, as outlined in Tolkien's legendarium.

Gothmog personally led the assault on Gondolin, contributing to its fall, but was later slain in the mountain passes following the evacuation. At the time, Gandalf had yet to manifest as a physical being, and existed solely in spiritual form.

However, were Gandalf the Grey pitted against Gothmog, it's likely that Gothmog would have won. Think about it: Gandalf just barely bested the Balrog known as Durin's Bane, a fight which lasted days, and which resulted in the deaths of both parties. Fighting a Balrog that was substantially more powerful than Durin's Bane likely wouldn't have turned out well for Gandalf the Grey.

However, he did receive a massive upgrade when he became Gandalf the White, so he probably could've bested Gothmog in that form. As Gandalf the Grey, though? No chance. 9 Saruman the White Saruman the White is explicitly stated by Gandalf to be the most powerful of the Istari, or the five wizards.

He is the leader of the group and, for much of the time prior to The Lord of the Rings trilogy, serves as a trusted advisor and friend to Gandalf. However, Saruman famously desires to control Middle-Earth, and allies himself with Sauron during the events of the films. It's not exactly disputable that Saruman is more powerful than Gandalf.

For one, Gandalf admits in The Hobbit films that Saruman is the greatest of the five, but also, Saruman actually bests Gandalf in a magical duel during the first The Lord of the Rings film. While Gandalf the White would have been a more equal foe to Saruman, Gandalf the Grey was certainly inferior to Saruman, or at least in terms of raw power. 8 Sauron Sauron is the Dark Lord responsible for most of the terrible things that happened during the Second and Third Ages.

Like Gandalf and Saruman, Sauron is one of the Maiar, a race of demigod-like angelic spirits that were created to help shape and reshape the destiny of Arda. Sauron is the eponymous Lord of the Rings, who forged the One Ring and the other rings of power that nearly enslaved all the free peoples of Middle-Earth. Sauron was the single most powerful Maia to ever walk in Arda, and caused untold destruction throughout his reign of terror.

As a Maia, killing his physical body isn't enough, as he will still continue to exist in spiritual form. In terms of destruction, influence, and might, Sauron definitely has Gandalf beat. Heck, Sauron even makes quick work of Gandalf in The Hobbit trilogy when the wizard comes knocking at the Dark Lord's door. 7 Tom Bombadil Tom Bombadil is one of Middle-Earth's greatest mysteries.

No one really knows what he is or where he came from, or what his purpose in the world is. Gandalf seems to deeply respect him and his simple lifestyle, but knows that Tom has been around at least as long as Gandalf himself has. Tom lives a reclusive life in the Old Forest near the Shire, gathering moss and for the most part, minding his own business, staying out of the affairs of mortal beings.

Interestingly enough, when the hobbits visit Tom in the book version of The Fellowship of the Ring, the One Ring has zero effect on Tom whatsoever. He is not corrupted or tempted by it, and it doesn't turn him invisible when he puts it on his finger.

Keep in mind, Gandalf refused to take the Ring to Mordor himself because he knew he was susceptible to the Ring's influence, and it could be extremely dangerous if it turned him to ally with Sauron. Though Tom isn't exactly a fighter, Sauron's greatest asset is useless on him, which is more that can be said for Gandalf.

As such, it is safe to assume that Tom is significantly more powerful than the wizard. 6 Smaug the Terrible Smaug is the dragon that serves as the primary antagonist of The Hobbit trilogy. A firedrake from the North, Smaug is attracted to the vast hoard of riches the dwarves of Erebor have amassed beneath the Lonely Mountain, so he destroys their kingdom and takes up residence in the ruins.

Smaug is much larger than typical dragons from folklore and was seen as being a significant threat by Gandalf. In the first The Hobbit movie, the dwarves reassure themselves by saying that killing Smaug will be easy since Gandalf has killed hundreds of dragons in his time... right? Judging by the way Gandalf dodges the question, it's safe to say he's never killed a dragon.

One shouldn't blame him for this, though, as very few individuals in Middle-Earth have killed a dragon, and none of them are wizards. It's actually unlikely Gandalf would be able to single-handedly kill Smaug, seeing as Gandalf hasn't been able to kill any dragon ever. Besides, if Gandalf could do it, he probably would have just done it instead of relying on someone else to do it. COLLIDER.

REVEAL MY FATE → The Fellowship Has Spoken Your Place in Middle-earth The scores below reveal your true character. Your highest number is your match. Even a tie tells a story — the Fellowship was never made of simple people. 💍 Frodo 🌿 Samwise 👑 Aragorn 🔥 Gandalf 🏹 Legolas ⚒️ Gimli 👁️ Sauron 🪨 Gollum FRODO BAGGINS You carry something heavy — and you carry it alone, even when you don't have to.

You were not born for greatness, and that is precisely why greatness chose you. Your courage is not the roaring, sword-swinging kind; it is quiet, stubborn, and terrifying in its refusal to quit. The Ring weighs on you more than anyone can see, and still you walk toward the fire. That is not weakness.

That is the rarest kind of strength there is. SAMWISE GAMGEE You are, without question, the best of them. Not the most powerful, not the most celebrated — but the most essential. Your loyalty is not a trait; it is a force of nature.

You would carry the person you love up the slopes of Mount Doom if it came to that, and we both know you'd do it without being asked. The world needs more people like you, and the world is lucky it has even one. ARAGORN You were born to lead, and you have spent years running from it.

The crown is yours by right, but you know better than anyone that right means nothing without the will and the worthiness to back it up. You are tempered by loss, shaped by long roads, and defined by a code of honour you hold to even when no one is watching. When you finally step forward, the world shifts. Because it was always waiting for you.

GANDALF You have seen more than you let on, and you say less than you know — which is exactly as it should be. You are a catalyst: you do not fight the battles yourself, you ignite the people who can. Your wisdom comes not from books but from an age of watching what happens when it is ignored. You arrive precisely when you mean to, and your presence alone changes what is possible.

A wizard is never late. LEGOLAS Graceful, perceptive, and almost preternaturally calm under pressure — you see things others miss and act before others react. You do not need to make a scene to be remarkable; your presence speaks for itself. You are loyal to those you choose to stand beside, and that choice is not made lightly.

You have lived long enough to know that the most beautiful things in this world are also the most fragile, and that is why you fight to protect them. GIMLI You are loud, proud, and absolutely formidable — and beneath all of that is one of the most fiercely loyal hearts in Middle-earth. You don't do anything by half measures.

Your friendships are forged like iron, your grudges run as deep as mines, and your courage in battle is the kind that makes legends. You came into this fellowship suspicious of everyone and ended it willing to die for an elf. That is not a small thing. That is everything.

SAURON You think in centuries and act in absolutes. Order, dominion, control — not because you are cruel by nature, but because you have decided that the world left to itself always falls apart, and you are the only one with the vision and the will to hold it together. You were not always this. Something was lost, or taken, or betrayed, and the version of you that stands now is the answer to that wound.

The tragedy is that you're not entirely wrong — just entirely too far gone to course-correct. GOLLUM You are a study in contradiction — pitiable and dangerous, cunning and broken, capable of both cruelty and something that once resembled love. You are defined by loss: of innocence, of self, of the one thing that gave your existence meaning.

Two voices war inside you constantly, and the tragedy is that the better one sometimes wins, just not often enough, and never at the right moment. You are a warning, yes — but also a mirror. We are all a little Gollum, given the right ring and enough time. ↻ RETAKE THE QUIZ 5 Ancalagon the Black Ancalagon the Black is also a dragon, though one that has yet to physically appear on screen.

Though this is understandable, because Ancalagon is incomprehensibly immense. He was known for being the largest dragon who ever lived, which contributed to how he was able to rampage across Beleriand in the First Age without encountering much opposition. Put it this way, it is said that when Ancalagon died, he fell out of the sky, and his corpse flattened the Thangorodrim, a range of three massive volcanoes.

Repeat: Ancalagon reduced a mountain range to rubble when he fell on it. That's how big he was. It's not an easy thing to visualize, needless to say. Look, if Gandalf knew he probably couldn't kill Smaug, what are the chances he would be able to kill Ancalagon?

Especially knowing that Ancalagon was even fiercer and larger than Smaug was. In short, Ancalagon is definitely more powerful than Gandalf. 4 The Valar The Valar are a set of 14 god-like beings that were created around the same time as the Maiar. The difference is that the Valar are on a higher tier in the hierarchy of Middle Earth—the Maiar were actually intended to be servants to the Valar.

Most times, when Gandalf is getting involved in the affairs of mortals, it's because the Valar are sending him to do so. More specifically, it's usually the will of Manwë, the chiefest of the Valar, who is basically the equivalent of Zeus or Odin. It's not exactly up for debate, here—the Valar were more powerful than Gandalf in every which way, because they were created as superior beings.

While the Valar rarely take physical form, these spirits primarily reside in the Undying Lands, also known as Aman. From the plain of Valinor, the Valar do their best to influence the events of Middle-Earth in their favour, usually seeking to protect their creations and the ones that serve them. Or at least, most of the Valar, anyway.

Speaking of which... 3 Morgoth Melkor, later known as Morgoth, is the only one of the Valar who actively works against the interests of the others. He is the ultimate force of evil in the world and is the master who oversees the Dark Lord Sauron. Because his motivations and purpose are so different from the other Valar, he definitely deserves a spot of his own.

He also deserves the spot because Tolkien wrote that Morgoth was actually the most powerful Valar, and possessed all the combined attributes of the others. Obviously, this makes him quite a dangerous and formidable foe to fight. Though he typically only handled things himself throughout the First Age, most of his will is enacted through Sauron.

Morgoth is basically the equivalent of Satan in Tolkien's legendarium, and he's one of the most powerful beings ever to be created. If the Valar are more powerful than Gandalf, and Morgoth is more powerful than the other Valar, obviously, Morgoth is more powerful than Gandalf by a mile. 2 Ungoliant Ungoliant is a primordial spirit of darkness that manifests herself as a giant spider.

It's unknown how she was created—all that is known is that she came from somewhere in the void outside of the physical plane of existence. She is perhaps most famous for birthing Shelob, the gigantic spider that guards the pass of Cirith Ungol, who is encountered in The Return of the King. But Ungoliant herself has accomplished much more than that. During her peak, Ungoliant actually defeated Morgoth in battle.

This impressed Morgoth, causing the two to form a shaky alliance, since Morgoth knew he couldn't best her. Fortunately, Ungoliant's insatiable hunger became too great, and she literally ate herself to death. If this arachnid was strong enough to handle the ultimate force of evil by herself, there's no doubt that Gandalf would be a pretty easy enemy for her to tackle. 1 Eru Ilúvatar Eru Ilúvatar is, in short, God.

He is the ultimate creator, the first being to spring into existence, and the incorporeal manifestation of the universe itself. Though he never makes a physical appearance, he does frequently involve himself in a direct and often dramatic way.

For example, he was the one who reshaped the world from a disc into a globe, and who sank the island of Númenor beneath the sea. He also"cast back" the empty continents, known as the Dark Land and the Land of the Sun. While Eru Ilúvatar isn't seen in any of Tolkien's works or their screen adaptations, his influence can definitely still be felt.

Eru Ilúvatar created the Valar and the Maiar, who were made with the explicit purpose of shaping the world according to their master's will. Eru Ilúvatar is way beyond anything the mortal or immortal beings of Middle-Earth can comprehend, and is definitely the most powerful being in existence. Eru Ilúvatar isn't just more powerful than Gandalf, but he's more powerful than anyone else, too. Good thing he and Gandalf are on the same side.
