Some take place in wildly different parts of the Star Wars timeline, some focus exclusively on the Jedi and the Force while other focus more on the Rebel Alliance or bounty hunters, and others still are wildly different in tone and maturity. One of the only things most Star Wars shows have in common is that they're canon. After Disney established the Expanded Universe as Star Wars Legends, the franchise has been almost exclusively interested in canon stories.
For the most part, that focus on canon has been a good thing for Star Wars. It undid some of the messier parts of the Expanded Universe's continuity, it made the messaging of the entire franchise more cohesive, and it allowed Star Wars to dive even deeper into established lore than ever before. One Star Wars show, however, stands apart from the rest because it isn't canon: Star Wars: Visions.
Star Wars: Visions Is So Good That It Doesn't Matter It's Non-Canon Normally, a show being considered non-canon usually carries a negative connotation. It can end up feeling like an unimportant spinoff that doesn't affect the larger franchise, and some viewers may feel like skipping it. Star Wars: Visions, however, is so good that it's easy to overlook these drawbacks of it not being canon.
While it doesn't have much of an impact on the galaxy far, far away, it's still some of the best Star Wars content in years. The animation style of The Clone Wars has reigned supreme at Star Wars for years, and it is quite stunning, but Visions is a very refreshing change of pace.
Each episode was made by a different studio from around the world, so its animation varies from 3D CGI to anime-style 2D animation. It provides a lot of variety, and it also allows for fights, emotions, and locations to be even more beautiful than they could ever be in live-action. Visions provides essentially the same thing to Star Wars that the Expanded Universe once did.
It's a playpen for Star Wars to run wild in, for stories from the galaxy far, far away to go far beyond the scope of the canon movies and shows. Visions may not be important to Star Wars canon, but if you like Star Wars, you're going to like this show. The fact that it's not canon actually makes it better.
Star Wars: Visions Not Being Canon Actually Makes It Better In many ways, Star Wars: Visions not being canon actually works in the show's benefit. Because it's completely unconcerned with fitting into Star Wars canon, Visions also isn't constrained by canon. The anthology series doesn't have to, say, tiptoe around the Sith hiding for thousands of years before The Phantom Menace like The Acolyte did; it can just tell a story about the Sith.
This extends to pretty much everything in Star Wars, as well. If a Visions episode wants to explore an alternate timeline where the Jedi are nearly extinct, it can just do that. Visions, by virtue of not being beholden to canon, has truly unlimited potential. It can push the boundaries of Star Wars further than anything in canon could, and the show routinely does exactly that.
Thanks to Visions, fans have seen things like lightsaber parasols, a heavy metal band, and a droid using the Force. Visions is endlessly creative, endlessly surprising, endlessly cool, and endlessly fun precisely because it's not canon. Visions can't get by with a few cameos from legacy Star Wars characters; each episode has to introduce and develop completely new characters, and it has to make audiences care about them in a matter of minutes.
