Friday Fling returned for its second weekend of the season on Friday.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Wind and gloomy weather did not stop residents from coming out for Friday Fling — a beloved Palmer tradition that dates back to 2002.
“Palmer still comes out. Alaskans, you know, they bundle up, put hats on, and they come out,” Kelley Shoemake, executive director of the Greater Palmer Chamber of Commerce, said. The 24th annual Friday Fling kicked off the season last week. Shoemake said that the event featured live music, 50 vendors and between 12 and 15 food carts.
Shoemake said the market brings an economic boost to downtown Palmer and provides critical revenue for small business owners who depend on markets to sustain their operations.
“800 is usually an average day for us, but like on Colony Days it can go up to 2,000 to 3,000,” Melissa Eller of Peak Flowers and Designs said. “Not only does it give us a place to be, because brick and mortar and everything that’s rental is so expensive. So being able to do these events and not have it cost an arm and a leg to be here is so important to us,” Eller said.
“It’s definitely a great opportunity for everybody to come out and support our local vendors and get involved with everybody,” Hicks said.
