Neon’s streak at the Cannes Film Festival continues with their seventh Palme d’Or win, as Christian Mungiu’s film Fjord, his first feature-length movie in English, won the prestigious award. The company also secured distribution rights for the film across the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. However, there is currently no official release date for the movie in the US.
Neon continues a seven-year run at Cannes Film Festival . Fjord is Christian Mungiu ’s first feature-length film in English. It follows a Romanian-Norwegian couple, Mihai and Lisbet , who move with their children to a small, remote village where Lisbet grew up.
Their hopes for a fresh start begin to unravel after they encounter another couple whose values and way of life go against their own. It also features Lisa Carlehed , Ellen Dorrit Petersen , Lisa Loven Kongsli , Henrikke Lund-Olsen , Vanessa Ceban , Markus Tønseth , and Jonathan Ciprian Breazu . Mungiu’s Fjord was critically acclaimed and received a Palme d’Or award at the iconic festival, marking the studio's seventh win in a row.
The Palme d’Or is the most prestigious award a filmmaker can win at Cannes. Beginning all the way back in 1955, the title is given each year to the director of the best feature film. This is also the director's second Palme d’Or win, making him one of only ten other creators to do so. Neon secured distribution rights for Fjord across the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand in May 2025.
French company Goodfellas is handling international distribution. There is currently no official release date for Fjord in the US at the time of this article's publication.
However, the movie will debut in theaters on August 19, 2026, in France and on September 4, 2026, in Norway. Neon's streak started in 2019 when Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite won the Palme d’Or, which later took home four Academy Awards . Parasite was also nominated for Best Film Editing and Best Production Design.
The company also won the award for Titane , Triangle of Sadness , Anatomy of a Fall , Anora , and It Was Just an Accident .
