The tradition is meant to honor service members who died in uniform, and for many volunteers, it’s personal.

ENTERPRISE, Ala. - Volunteers spent Friday morning at Meadowlawn Cemetery placing American flags and flowers at the graves of veterans ahead of Memorial Day.

The tradition is meant to honor service members who died in uniform, and for many volunteers, it’s personal. Rows of headstones marked the cemetery, and community members made sure those stories weren’t forgotten, placing flags and flowers in remembrance just days before Memorial Day.

“Memorial Day is about those people who made it possible to have Memorial Day off,” said Boyd May, a volunteer. “It’s a catch 22 without the remembrance of them. That’s the important part. You can’t have the going to the beach without the people who made it possible.

” For volunteers, it’s more than a holiday weekend. They say Memorial Day is about pausing and recognizing the cost of freedom and the families who live with that sacrifice long after the ceremonies end.

“I feel for the losses of people and seeing all the people who have fought and sacrificed themselves just hits me,” said Private First Class Ian Murphy. Some stopped at specific graves, leaving flowers for someone they knew. Others placed flags for veterans they’d never met, because they say gratitude doesn’t require a personal connection.

“I would like to thank everyone for coming out and also respecting and honoring the sacrifice they have given,” said Pamela Smith, commander of VFW Post 6683 in Enterprise. At Meadowlawn Cemetery, volunteers said each flag and each flower is a reminder that Memorial Day is not about sales or cookouts. It’s about service and sacrifice.

By mid-morning, the flags lined the cemetery — small markers of a big message: to remember those who gave everything and to make sure their sacrifice is still seen. Organizers said the flags and flowers will stay up through Memorial Day weekend. They’re reminding everyone that the holiday is meant to honor those who died while serving in the U.S. military.
