Rover.com based its report on more than 1 million pet names in its database, breaking down what’s hot in dog names based on entertainment, sports and other influential trends. Wemby first appeared on the dog list in 2023, Wembanyama's rookie year in the NBA. For 2024, the name leapt 127% to the No. 2 spot in sports-related dog names. “Brunson,” after New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson, topped the sports dog list. In October 2023, the San Antonio Humane Society posted an adoption notice on Facebook for a 7-month-old terrier mix named Wemby. The lucky dog scored a forever home roughly 24 hours later. Based on Rover.com data, the top 10 pet names in San Antonio are, in descending order: Luna, Bella, Charlie, Max, Bailey, Daisy, Lola, Milo, Buddy and Duke. Top trending names in San Antonio include Amber, Churro and Gator. Charlie repeated as the most popular male dog name in 2024, while Luna repeated as the most popular name for female dogs and cats. Milo clawed his way to the crown for most popular male cat name. Overall, Bluey ran away with the top trending name for dogs and cats, after the eponymous cartoon Blue Heeler from the Australian preschool TV series. Other popular pet names in 2024 include Taylor Swift, Styles after Harry Styles, and Gurney after the character from “Dune 2.” On the food-inspired front, there was a three-way tie between Calzone, Chive and Provolone.
