The North East Independent School District is discussing how to proceed with its school parks after the City of San Antonio ended a funding program.
The North East Independent School District board will soon determine the future of 14 school parks that will lose funding after the city sunsets a decade-long program created to increase neighborhood accessibility to green space. The SPARK Program was founded through a partnership between the City of San Antonio, nonprofit San Antonio Sports and school districts to convert public school grounds into neighborhood parks.
’s presentation included photos of each SPARK location, including Hidden Forest, where the grass had been worn down to dirt. Superintendent Sean Maika said it has been challenging to maintain the grass because of drought, watering restrictions and high usage. “Because they are never really closed, those areas don’t get a rest anymore,” Maika said. “Not only are our kids playing on it during the day, but we also have kids playing on it on the weekends.
