South Euclid bans face coverings and large backpacks at parks this summer, the city calling it a proactive measure to keep park-goers safe

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio - “It literally happened right where we’re standing here,” Joe Di Lillo of the South Euclid Police Department.

“A large number showed up, there were some fights that broke out in various areas,” he continued about thel arge of group. “Literally, there was couple hundred kids here followed by a couple thousand in just a matter of a few moments. ” A fight at South Euclid’s national Night Out event the impetus for the signs around South Euclid parks, banning face coverings.

“The purpose of this is to make sure if somebody comes into our park, we can identify them if they chose to come in here and break the rules,” explained Di Lillo. South Euclid’s mayor, Georgine Welo, and the city’s police department stress this ban is not targeting anyone but is just a measure to keep the parks safer this summer.

“We’re not targeting anybody,” assured Di Lillo. “If anything, we’re being proactive in making sure that individuals aren’t bringing prohibited items into our park that might compromise the safety and well-being of our residents. ” Meanwhile, the city is getting ready for pools to open, summer sports seasons to kick off, and activities to begin.

“It’s the people who come to our parks to enjoy the many, many great wonderful amenities we have here, we want to make sure they’re kept safe,” Di Lillo concluded.
