Set in a contemporary high school environment, Fleming's interpretation of the 18th-century Neapolitan tale of fiancée-swapping will be performed from July 21 to 26. She envisions a 1980s setting in Yarmouth, Massachusetts, incorporating elements of World Wide Wrestling and Jane Fonda aerobics.
Fleming, known for her captivating voice and extensive repertoire, transitioned from performing central operatic roles in 2017 but continues to appear in recitals and contemporary operas.This production marks a departure for the renowned soprano, who has chosen to direct instead of performing. However, she remains deeply connected to the opera world, collaborating with Patrick Summers, the co-artistic director of the Aspen Opera Theater and Vocal Arts Program, for this production. Summers has worked closely with Fleming since 2019 and praises her multifaceted talents and kind nature. Fleming's directing debut for 'Cosi' was initially planned for the Washington National Opera in 2021 but was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Aspen Festival, running from July 2 to August 24, will also feature the world premiere of Christopher Theofanidis' 'Siddhartha, She,' a gender-swapping music drama based on Hermann Hesse's novel.
