ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Long lines were seen Friday at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, a day after new security equipment used by TSA resulted in Airport officials said Thursday that longer wait times could be expected to last into Friday, ahead of the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
The backup at the security checkpoint was due to “intermittent outages” of X-ray screening equipment, according to a TSA spokesperson on Thursday. The spokesperson stated in an update Friday that the outages were still occurring, resulting in the same delays.
“Technicians remain on site and wait times are improving, however some longer than usual wait times are still occurring,” the spokesperson said. TSA advised passengers to arrive at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights.
Some travelers using TSA PreCheck — a system that helps get passengers through security checkpoints much quicker — told Alaska’s News Source on Thursday that it took them two hours to get through the lines.posted Friday morning on his Facebook page that he was in touch with the TSA administrator — without specifying who it was — to solve the problem as soon as possible.
“As soon as I heard about the long lines at the Ted Stevens International Airport in Anchorage, we contacted the TSA Administrator to tell her that the wait times were unacceptable and that they needed to fix the problem in Anchorage ASAP,” Sullivan wrote. “TSA told me that the long lines were the result of equipment upgrades and assured me that all TSA checkpoint lanes will be open by close of business today.
