"When the BMW began to accelerate away in an apparent attempt to evade, the officers initiated a vehicle pursuit. " The driver, who was identified as 30-year-old Jesus Ernesto Jaime, made a U-turn on the Olympic off-ramp of the 5 Freeway and crashed into a police vehicle. Authorities said Jaime then exited the car and began shooting at officers.
"Responding officers issued verbal commands for Jaime to surrender," police said. "Jaime refused to comply and instead removed a semi-automatic handgun from his waistband and pointed it at an officer, resulting in an . " Police returned fire, killing Jaime at the scene. A passenger in the BMW complied with officers' commands to surrender and was taken into custody without incident, according to police.
Police said a 9mm semi-automatic Glock handgun, loaded with 17 live rounds, was recovered from the scene. Additionally, a loaded .357 Magnum Astra revolver was recovered from inside the BMW. Both weapons were booked as evidence.
