The earthquake struck at 9:46 p.m. local time and was centered about 3.7 miles east-southeast of the Honaunau-Napoopoo area west of Mauna Loa, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Strong shaking was widely reported across the islands but there has been no apparent impacts to Mauna Loa or Klauea, officials said.
County of Hawaii Mayor Kimo Alameda said there are reports of damages to homes and structures, with roadway crews out clearing debris after several rockslides occurred around the South Kona area. An estimated 500 Hawaiian Electric Company customers are currently without power, with reports of down utility lines and power outages in South Kona.
