Fairfield police released body camera footage and witness video showing how the situation unfolded shortly after 12:30 p.m. during a fight involving multiple students on campus. The videos show a school official responding first, followed by officers who were called in to assist. In the footage, an officer is seen escorting one student into an office while attempting to detain another. As the officer tries to walk the second student away, a struggle breaks out.
Several officers intervene, and the situation escalates as they attempt to handcuff the student. Police said the student was showing "aggressive behaviors" and had already hit one officer. The department said an officer used so-called "distraction strikes" after the student did not comply with commands. The incident has sparked concern among parents, including Robert Miller, whose young daughter takes singing lessons at the school and is expected to attend in the future.
"It's scary. It's scary for us as parents. We've got to protect our kids," Miller said.
"They should be worried about sports and school. They shouldn't be worried if police are going to beat them up.
""It broke my heart to see what happened, that is my daughter's friend," she said. "There was no explanation for that at all for that officer to hit a child like. " The response has prompted broader community reaction. Students held a walkout and protest following the incident, and local organizations have begun raising concerns.
The NAACP's Tri-City branch said it has reached out to the Fairfield Police Department. The Solano County Black Chamber of Commerce also issued a statement expressing concern.
"As mothers, fathers, leaders, and community members, many of us felt an overwhelming sense of pain and heartbreak while watching... this is a tragic and emotional situation that impacts real people, real families, and an entire community," the statement said. The Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District said it is conducting its own investigation and declined to answer questions about the incident while that review is underway.
Police said both students involved were arrested on suspicion of causing a disturbance on a school campus and resisting arrest. The incident continues to draw scrutiny as the community awaits the results of the ongoing investigations.
