ByMail carriers and delivery drivers are among those facing some of the toughest conditions during winter storms, navigating snow-covered and icy streets to reach homes across the city. "The winter's hard," said Chante Noel, who has been delivering mail for the United States Postal Service for about 16 years.
Noel works year-round in all types of weather, trudging through snow and cold to serve the Eastwick section of Philadelphia. She said she walks 10-14 miles a day, and neighbors say they notice her dedication. "All the elements. She's out here in the cold, the rain, she's good," said Belinda, a neighbor on Noel's route. Despite her experience, winter conditions do not get easier. Noel said she relies on preparation to get through each shift.Noel said she is fortunate that many residents on her route clear their sidewalks.However, not all routes are as manageable. Ice remains a frequent hazard. "Occasionally, you might encounter a little bit of ice," Noel said, adding, "I have fallen in my career, yes, I have!""We just need our customers, you know, to look out for not only just us but themselves and shovel the walkway," Noel said.Gregorio Nava, who delivers food across Philadelphia, said he slipped multiple times as some roads north and south of Center City remained unplowed.Noel is already looking ahead to warmer days.Copyright © 2026 WPVI-TV.
