The arctic blast that came over Central Texas left one person dead in Austin over the weekend.Austin Police confirmed this person was 43 year-old, Gregory Ross

Austin Police confirmed this person was a 43-year-old, Gregory Ross Mireles. ATCEMS believes this person was experiencing homelessness and believes they died of hypothermia based on the conditions and where they were located.

This incident occurred despite the city housing a record number of people during the cold spell. Austin Mayor Kirk Watson confirmed the fatality, marking it as the first during this winter storm."This sadly underscores the critically important work that is being done with our cold weather shelters," Watson said in a press conference on Sunday. Austin-Travis County EMS reported responding to approximately 400 service calls over the weekend, treating 35 individuals for hypothermia. "We did save a lot of people," said Chief Wesley Hopkins, highlighting the efforts of the Community Health Paramedic Program in getting people to shelters. The city's Homeless Strategy Office provided shelter for around 850 individuals, a record number, during the cold weather. David Gray, Director of Austin Homeless Strategies and Operations, emphasized the extensive preparations made since Martin Luther King Jr. Day, including staffing and transportation to warming centers. "The one metric we strive for is a big fat zero in the loss of life column," Gray said, acknowledging the need for system improvements following the tragedy.Warming centers will continue to operate through tonight and into tomorrow morning as the city seeks to prevent further loss of life.As temperatures drop across Central Texas, one question keeps popping up online: Should you drip your faucets or let them stream? To settle the debate, we spokeMultiple school districts across the region are closed Monday due to hazardous road conditions caused by the weekend's winter storm, and some are already announA large fire tore through an apartment building in Bee Cave on Monday morning, affecting 20 units and displacing 45 residents. The fire at the Estates at Bee CavAfter a dangerous weekend of sleet and icy roads across Central Texas, conditions are slowly improving — but caution is still critical Monday morning.Road CondiA sledding accident involving teenagers left a 16-year-old girl dead and another in critical condition.Just before 2:30 p.m. Sunday, police in Frisco were calle
