The odds of a major volcanic eruption from Mount Spurr took a tumble Wednesday with the decrease of the aviation color code from “yellow” to “green.”

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The odds of a major volcanic eruption from Mount Spurr decreased Wednesday with the lowering of the aviation color code from “yellow” to “green.” That means the heightened alert levels that the Alaska Volcano Observatory has posted for the last 10 months areScientists with the observatory say that the frequency of small earthquakes, gas emissions and melting ice have all gone down and they now believe the odds of an eruption in the near future are “extremely low.

”on Oct. 16, 2024, when the color code was upgraded from “green” to “yellow,” indicating a possible eruption after an increase in seismic activity and steam emissions were noticed by state volcano experts. Chief Meteorologist Melissa Frey speaks with Dave Schneider, geophysicist with the USGS and the Alaska Volcano Observatory about the recent changes on Mt. Spurron Spurr, predicting that the most likely outcome would be something similar to what occurred in 1953 and 1992, when major eruptions blanketed the city of Anchorage in varying amounts of volcanic ash. Officials with AVO noticed increased unrest with Mount Spurr in February 2024 as more earthquakes were detected and the slopes of the volcano started releasing more steam and gases. With the latest update Wednesday, scientists now believe the magma percolating below the surface of the volcano is no longer moving upward.. In that eruption, ash darkened the skies above Anchorage and covered everything exposed to the air in a fine layer of ashy dust, forcing people to wear masks and change out their vehicle’s air filters.
