A construction crew's accidental strike caused a major crude oil pipeline rupture in East Los Angeles, leading to a 2,400-gallon spill that entered the Los Angeles River. Emergency response continues with containment booms deployed and wildlife affected.
A significant environmental incident occurred in Los Angeles when a construction crew accidentally ruptured an underground crude oil pipeline while installing a fiber optic line.
The breach happened around 3 a.m. on Friday near Alondra Boulevard and the 710 Freeway in the Paramount/Compton area, releasing approximately 2,400 gallons of crude oil. The spilled oil quickly entered nearby storm drains and flowed into the Los Angeles River, creating a major multi-agency emergency response that has continued for several days.
Emergency crews have been working around the clock to contain and clean up the spill, deploying protective booms at multiple locations along the river to prevent the oil from reaching the ocean. The original rupture site was identified at East Cesar Chavez and Eastern avenues in East Los Angeles, where the pipeline has been shut down, though repairs are still ongoing and a small amount of seepage may still occur.
The oil has already traveled roughly 11 miles downstream from the break point, prompting intensive cleanup operations along the riverbed. Crews have been actively searching for residual oil, replacing saturated absorbent booms, and removing contaminated equipment to minimize the ecological damage. State wildlife officials have confirmed that at least 25 birds have been found covered in oil and have been taken for treatment, highlighting the direct impact on local fauna.
The spill has also prompted concerns from nearby residents, such as Nancy Dominguez from Compton, who noted the absence of ducks she usually sees along the river and expressed worries about potential long-term effects on the ecosystem and what might happen if the oil reaches the ocean. Air monitoring conducted by the Los Angeles County Fire Health Hazmat team and the South Coast Air Quality Management District has not detected dangerous levels of airborne pollutants.
However, Los Angeles County Public Health officials have warned that nuisance petroleum odors may persist in affected areas and could cause temporary symptoms like headaches, nausea, dizziness, eye or throat irritation, and breathing difficulties, especially for those with asthma. As a precaution, residents are advised to close windows and doors, turn off ventilation systems that draw outside air, and limit outdoor activities when odors are noticeable.
The health department emphasized that brief exposure is not expected to cause long-term health effects based on current data. Authorities are also urging the public not to attempt to rescue oil-covered wildlife themselves but to contact the Oiled Wildlife Care Network at 1-877-823-6926 for professional assistance.
While the leak is now controlled and no longer actively releasing oil, a comprehensive timeline for completing both the cleanup along the Los Angeles River and the pipeline repairs at the original rupture site has not been provided. The incident underscores the vulnerabilities of aging infrastructure and the ongoing challenges of protecting urban waterways and wildlife from industrial accidents
