Protesters gather as extensive tree removal begins for Shoreline transportation project

Protesters gathered near the work zone to call for more trees to be spared in future phases of Shoreline's transportation improvements along North 145th Street on Thursday, April 4, 2024. Work crews began cutting down the first of hundreds of trees Thursday that will eventually be cleared as the city of ShorelineThe removal began Thursday morning and is expected to continue into the weekend.

A group of protesters held up signs advocating for the trees as they were being taken down. The demonstrators said hundreds of additional trees will be cut down as future phases of the transportation project get underway, and they called on city officials to adjust these plans., a section of North 145th Street will remain closed between First Ave Northeast to just west of I-5 as improvements are made along the corridor ahead of the opening of a light rail station later this year.

The city will be replacing traffic signals at the access ramps for the interstate with roundabouts. The roundabouts will be a better option for cars, bicycles and pedestrians to access the light rail station that goes into service next fall, according to the city.

The city will eventually plant 864 replacement trees to make up for the loss, and several dozen of those will be along North 145th Street. Activists have said the environmental and health benefits of the established trees are irreplaceable.
