Families in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District are being warned that there may not be any bus services next week.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Families in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District are being warned that there may not be any bus services next week. Students in the district’s regions 1–5 should plan for no bus service beginning on Monday, March 2, according to the school district.

Those include all Mat-Su schools except for Su-Valley Jr/Sr High, Talkeetna Elementary, Trapper Creek Elementary, Willow Elementary, and Glacier View School. Teamsters Local 959 said negotiations began in June 2025 and alleged the company has been slow to meet, unprepared for bargaining sessions, and unwilling to provide information the union requested. The union said Durham presented what it called a final offer in January, but workers rejected it. The union said it has been nearly six weeks since the company last met with union representatives for negotiations, and that Durham declined to meet this week. Durham School Services sent a press release to Alaska’s News Source stating that Durham and the Union accepted formal negotiation dates of March 17 and 18, with a mediator present. “A strike before those dates is both unnecessary and disruptive, especially when the parties were already scheduled to meet and finalize an agreement,” the Durham statement reads. “Durham is fully prepared to negotiate with the Union on the dates they originally selected. Walking out now—before mediation, before the scheduled bargaining sessions, and before the process is complete—serves only to disrupt families and repeat the harm caused by the 2023 strike. The school district states that schools will remain open, and classes will continue as scheduled. They also clarified that the disruption would not affect transportation for Su-Valley Jr/Sr High, Talkeetna Elementary, Trapper Creek Elementary, Willow Elementary, or Glacier View Schools. “While we remain hopeful that no job action occurs and scheduled bargaining continues, we want families in the core area to prepare in case service is impacted.Sand Point community ‘reeling’ after teen goes missing after falling out of canoe ‘It was incredibly swift’: Why an Alaska family was removed to Mexico this week, one son sent to Tacoma ICE facility FridayAlaska investigators report AI-generated child abuse cases that can’t be prosecuted - yetFairbanks man sentenced to 52 years for charges including sexual abuse of a minor
