Alaska State Troopers have identified the man killed in an officer-involved shooting Saturday in Utqiaġvik.
Killbear, an Utqiaġvik resident, died after North Slope Borough police officers shot him during a response to a reported domestic violence assault, according to troopers.
The shooting happened just after 4 p.m. Saturday in the 4100 block of Herman Street. Troopers said officers found Killbear barricaded behind a door inside a residence. As officers breached the door, troopers said Killbear came out with a knife, and two officers fired their handguns. The officers who fired their weapons were identified by troopers as Sgt.
Riley Weik, a two-year veteran of the North Slope Borough Police Department, and Officer Christopher Green, who has been with the department for 10 months. The North Slope Borough said officers began providing medical aid after the shooting. Killbear was taken to a hospital, where he died. Troopers said one officer suffered a minor knife injury during the encounter.
The NSBPD has requested the Alaska Bureau of Investigation look into what happened, troopers said.
