The move by Wellspan in York comes more than 6 months after a gunman barged into the intensive care unit of a neighboring hospital and as many facilities upgrade security.
in York that left two dead, including a police officer, WellSpan has announced it is creating its own police force as part of $20 million in security upgrades. Vice President of Public Safety William White will oversee a force comprised of armed officers and unarmed security officers, according to a Friday news release.
WellSpan said the police department will monitor hospitals and facilities across its health system. Wellspan’s hospital in York, located off Interstate 83 at Rathton Road, is about five miles from UPMC Memorial in York, where aWellSpan said its police officers will have prior law enforcement experience, complete “additional internal training,” and meet annual municipal police officer training certifications. In addition to the police and security coverage, WellSpan has created a weapons detection program that will scan visitors, patients and employees as they enter its hospitals. WellSpan said the police department will be rolled out in stages and will be fully operational by the summer of 2026.
