China showcases autonomous helicopter operating from Type 075 amphibious assault ship, signaling expanded naval drone capabilities.
A newly revealed autonomous helicopter has been spotted operating aboard one of China ’s largest amphibious warships, signaling a potential expansion of the country’s naval drone operations. State broadcaster China Central Television released footage on Thursday showing the uncrewed aircraft on a Type 075 amphibious assault ship, offering a rare look at how China may be integrating autonomous systems into frontline naval missions in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea.
Drone helicopter spotted on an assault shipThe video showed the lightweight helicopter parked on the deck of the Type 075 amphibious assault ship with folding rotors. Its size appeared slightly smaller than the shipborne Z-20 used by the People’s Liberation Army Navy.Analysts believe the aircraft may be the AR-2000, an unmanned helicopter developed by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China. The model weighs about two tons, roughly 4,400 pounds, and was first publicly displayed at an air show in 2024.This marks the first time such an unmanned helicopter has been observed on a Type 075 vessel. Earlier sightings in 2020 showed what analysts believed to be the AR-500C unmanned helicopter prototype placed on the deck of the same ship class. The Type 075 itself is a large amphibious platform with a displacement of about 35,000 to 40,000 metric tons, roughly equivalent to 38,500 to 44,000 US tons. It is designed to transport troops, landing craft, armored vehicles, and helicopters. Chinese media often describe it as a helicopter carrier or light aircraft carrier. The vessel can host more than 30 helicopters and launch or recover up to six aircraft simultaneously.Autonomous design could increase flight operationsMilitary analysts say the drone helicopter’s small footprint could significantly increase operational capacity aboard naval vessels.Fu Qianshao, a retired PLA Air Force colonel, explained that the aircraft’s compact design allows multiple drones to operate simultaneously from the ship’s deck.“Its performance should be close to that of crewed helicopters but with a higher level of automation,” Fu said, as reported by South China Morning Post .Because the aircraft does not carry a human pilot, it can operate under conditions that might limit traditional helicopters. Analysts believe this advantage could improve mission flexibility in rough weather or challenging sea conditions.Song Zhongping, a military analyst and former PLA instructor, said the drone helicopter could operate in harsher environments than conventional aircraft.“Crewed helicopters have more limitations,” Song said. “They cannot take off or land in some bad sea conditions and weather situations.”“This uncrewed helicopter should also serve as a reference for damage assessment of crewed helicopters and extend their reconnaissance and kill range.”Reconnaissance and strike missions at seaThe drone helicopter could also take on high-risk missions without endangering pilots. Yue Gang, a retired PLA colonel and military commentator, said autonomous aircraft could be used for reconnaissance and strike tasks.“Drones can be deployed more frequently, without the need to consider personnel load,” Yue added. He also noted that automated takeoff and landing capabilities could allow faster deployment cycles during operations.Fu added that the aircraft could support a wide range of combat missions. These may include reconnaissance, anti-submarine warfare, and attack operations using depth charges, torpedoes, or missiles.“This uncrewed helicopter is expected to fly farther than crewed helicopters because it reduces some of the weight in the cockpit,” he said. “This allows for more space for fuel and equipment, increasing loiter time and flight range.”Deployment tied to regional tensionsThe footage appears to show the aircraft operating from the Hubei, which entered service in August last year and mainly operates in the South China Sea, SCMP reported.China currently has four Type 075 ships in service. The first vessel, the Hainan, was launched in 2019 and commissioned in 2021. It participated in a large-scale military exercise near Taiwan in December, marking the first time a Type 075 ship took part in such drills.Yue suggested the drone helicopter may be particularly suited for operations in disputed waters, where China and the Philippines have competing territorial claims.“The Philippines generally does not deploy fighter jets for conflict but rather smaller aircraft, so China could use the uncrewed helicopter for expulsion or reconnaissance,” he added.Analysts believe the new aircraft could eventually operate from many different naval vessels. According to Yue, any ship capable of launching helicopters could potentially deploy such drones, including aircraft carriers, destroyers, and future amphibious ships like the Type 076 Sichuan.Recent images circulating online also suggested the new ship may carry the stealthy GJ-21 unmanned combat aerial vehicle, hinting at China’s broader push to integrate autonomous systems into its naval fleet.
