My Hero Academia's villains are top-tier, but one in particular is the greatest of all, and it's not even the series' most powerful. Contrary to popular belief, Shigaraki is a far better villain than All For One , and his character arc has much more depth and complexity.
All For One's reasoning for becoming a villain falls flat when compared to Shigaraki's, because Shigaraki's traumatic past is a lot more understandable motivation for villainy than All For One becoming evil purely out of self-interest. Not only is Shigaraki's story more interesting to me, it reveals crucial issues in Hero Society, which adds an additional level of depth to his character. Shigaraki’s Traumatic Backstory Explains Why He Turned to Evil When Shigaraki Most Needed a Hero, No One Was There to Rescue Him Close When Shigaraki was a child, formerly known as Tenko Shimura, he lost his family as a result of an accident with his Decay Quirk. Decay allows Shigaraki to disintegrate anything he touches into dust, which, although helpful in battles, can become devastating when he is unable to control it properly. Unfortunately, his childhood was also not a happy time, since he suffered from abuse at the hands of his father, who despised heroes. Tenko was starry-eyed and hopeful in his youth, with dreams of becoming a hero, but his father crushed his ambitions at every turn and that built resentment. This sadly included his family members, which left him completely alone. Although he had a difficult relationship with his family, he never wanted them to die, and this tragedy left him broken and helpless. He waited in vain for the heroes he admired to come save him, but no one ever arrived. This tragic origin cemented Shigaraki's burning hatred towards all heroes, because they abandoned him when he needed them most. Shigaraki’s Downfall Reveals The Devastating Negative Effects Quirks Can Have, Like Loneliness and Isolation The League of Villains' Members Have All Suffered Negative Side Effects of Their Quirks, Which Points Out a Larger Issue My Hero Academia largely paints Quirks in a positive light, as something desirable to have, but they are certainly not all good, and Shigaraki's story is a prime example of this. The League of Villains itself proves that having a Quirk society deems as"bad" can cause more harm than good, evidenced by the bullying Spinner faced and the isolation from her family and friends that Toga suffered, for example. Those with admirable, heroic Quirks, like All Might and Deku are praised, while those with less commendable Quirks are quietly outcast from society and offered no help, like Shigaraki was. Posts 3 Shigaraki’s story is a lot more compelling to me, because with a different upbringing and the right intervention, he may never have become evil, but he felt he had no choice but to fight back against the people who failed him during his weakest moment. Heroes are not infallible, even though the story sometimes seems to paint them that way. I appreciate Shigaraki's story because of the different perspective to the story it offers, and although Shigaraki's hatred of all heroes may be misplaced, it is certainly understandable why he has a grudge against the group who failed to rescue him when he needed it. All For One Was Pure Evil Incarnate From Birth, Making Him Less Interesting All for One Manipulates Everyone He Comes Across for His Own Gain, Including Shigaraki All For One's origins lack this profound impact, because he was always evil, from his birth. A character certainly does not have to suffer abuse, neglect, or trauma like Shigaraki to be well-written, but All For One's driving motivation does feel lackluster when compared to Shigaraki's. Even before he was born, All For One weakened his brother, Yoichi, in the womb, sapping his energy and life force for himself. This disturbing aspect of the supervillain's story made it clear that he would spend his life taking advantage of others in every way possible, which he certainly did. All For One is the very definition of evil, showing no regard for others or remorse for his actions. He hates heroes just like Shigaraki, but his justification for his stance is a lot flimsier. He spends the entire story rebelling against heroes and manipulating others, including Shigaraki, for his own personal gain and to increase his power. Shigaraki was an easy target because of his already established detestation of heroes, and All For One preyed on this vulnerability. He fed into Shigaraki's belief that heroes are the problem in the world, molding Shigaraki into an ideal villain, with no care for his wellbeing. Shigaraki and All for One Differ Drastically in Their Motivations All for One Just Wants Power, While Shigaraki Wants Revenge on Those Who Failed Him The prime difference between Shigaraki and All For One is their justification for evil, and Shigaraki's makes him my favorite My Hero Academia villain. All For One is evil because he wants to be, and because he wants to rule the world and be in a position of power over everyone. Conversely, Shigaraki is intent on making heroes pay for abandoning him during a time of deep hurt, which caused a decades-long grudge to fester within him. Although the harm Shigaraki causes is not pardonable, it is a lot more understandable when viewed through the lens of his traumatic past. His story is important because it illuminates the fact that heroes are flawed like everyone else, and unable to save every person every time. Shigaraki and the League of Villains caused a lot of pain for not only others, but themselves, but they also sparked necessary change within Hero Society, like Ochaco's organization to help people with uncontrollable Quirks.
