Austin, Houston and Texas-style barbecue win big as the world-famous Michelin Guide gives its first-ever Texas stars to 15 restaurants.
HOUSTON — San Antonio entered the ranks of the world’s elite restaurant cities Monday as the globally renowned Michelin Guide awarded one Michelin star to Mixtli , the progressive Mexican restaurant in Southtown .
Mixtli joined 14 other Texas restaurants in winning the coveted one-star Michelin designation in the guide’s first-ever recognition of the state’s restaurant scene. Austin and Houston were the night’s biggest winners at the Michelin awards ceremony in Houston, with Austin picking up seven one-star ratings and Houston earning six, while Dallas garnered one. MORE MICHELIN HONORS: San Antonio’s Hotel Emma earns two Michelin Keys Texas-style barbecue was the night’s other big winner, with four barbecue joints earning one-star designations, the first-ever Michelin stars awarded to the state’s familiar style of wood-smoked meats and sauces. They included InterStellar BBQ, la Barbecue and Leroy and Lewis Barbecue in Austin and CorkScrew BBQ in Houston. Michelin, the French tire company that started publishing restaurant guides in 1900 to encourage car travel, defines a one-star rating as “restaurants using top-quality ingredients, where dishes with distinct flavors are prepared to a consistently high standard.” No Texas restaurant earned the guide’s more prestigious two- or three-star ratings. San Antonio also picked up four of the Michelin Guide’s Bib Gourmand awards, named for the Michelin Man mascot Bibendum and given to restaurants with “great food at a great value”: Cullum's Attaboy, The Jerk Shack, Ladino and Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery. In all, Texas earned 45 Bib Gourmand honors, with 15 going to barbecue restaurants, including Burnt Bean Co. nearby in Seguin and the Top 10 Texas barbecue spot Barbs B Q in Lockhart. Michelin also recognized 57 Texas restaurants that will be included in the guide as “recommended” restaurants. San Antonio earned seven of those spots, including Garcia’s Mexican Food and the city’s top barbecue spot 2M Smokehouse. See the full list of Texas restaurants recognized by the Michelin Guide below. SAN ANTONIO’S TOP 25: The city’s best restaurants The Michelin star adds to a long list of accolades for the immersive multicourse Mexican restaurant started by chefs Rico Torres and Diego Galicia in 2013, including a James Beard Awards finalist nod for Best Restaurant in the country in 2023 and the No. 1 spot among the Express-News’ Top 25 San Antonio restaurants. Notes from the anonymous inspector's report praised Mixtli for 'a shared reverence for Mexican cuisine that is the real driving force behind this endeavor. Tasting menus shift often, focusing on a different part of Mexico and may offer up cutting-edge interpretations of Oaxacan specialties or a meal focused on the cuisine of 'Tierra Caliente.' Not content to restrain their explorations to the regional diversity of Mexican cuisine, the menus also draw from the culinary past. Expect cooking that is both cerebral and delicious, with meticulously prepared, artfully plated dishes that tell a story while thrilling your palate.' Mixtli also won a special Michelin award for Outstanding Service, given to sommelier Hailey Pruitt and bar manager Lauren Beckman. By extension, San Antonio also did well by virtue of the Emmer & Rye Hospitality Group, which opened Pullman Market at Pearl this year. The group’s flagship restaurant Emmer & Rye in Austin won a Michelin Green Star for sustainability, while its Austin restaurant Hestia earned a Michelin star. The group’s Pearl restaurant Ladino earned a Bib Gourmand designation, and its Nicosi dessert restaurant at Pullman Market and the Mediterranean spot Ezov in Austin each won “recommended” status. Monday's honors weren't the city's first Michelin Guide acknowledgments. In September, Hotel Emma at Pearl was awarded two Michelin Keys, the guide’s benchmark for honoring great hotels across the world. The Michelin Guide, already a fixture in Europe and beyond, began publishing U.S. guides in New York in 2005. The restaurant guide is making its premiere in Texas this year through paid partnerships with Travel Texas and city tourism agencies in San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth and Houston. The Michelin Guide for Texas will be available through the Michelin guide app and online at guide.michelin.com.
