Two sisters jumped into action to help a struggling owl in the middle of a busy Cincinnati road Friday night.

CINCINNATI - Two sisters jumped into action to help a struggling owl in the middle of a busy Cincinnati road Friday night. Alexis and Alicia Jones were in the car with their mom, Pamela , heading home from a movie around 9 or 10 p.

m. when they spotted an unusual, small ball of feathers on Montgomery Road.Realizing the owl was still alive, the family knew they had to get the bird to safety. The family circled back, and Alexis scooped the owl off the ground, keeping it close to her chest. “I picked him up with zero hesitation. He was really limp,” she said. “My sister had a jacket on and wrapped it around him.” After checking the bird’s wings, body, and claws, the family believes the owl was suffering from the cold since there were not any visible injuries. A barred owl was found struggling on Montgomery Road. Alexis and her sister, Alicia, rescued it from oncoming traffic and frigid temperatures Friday night.Temperatures in Cincinnati were dangerously low Friday night–between 9 and 12 degrees. A winter storm was also headed toward the Tri-State the next day.The family placed the owl in a cardboard box inside their car for warmth. Eventually, it was well enough to fly away into a nearby tree.“If she didn’t move him, he wouldn’t have made it, I think.” Pamela said. “It was wonderful to see them in action.”However, Wildlife Biologist Laura Kearns says this barred owl exhibited “unusual behavior.” “The owl laying down on its face is an indication that the bird is in poor condition,” Kearns said. “Likely it is malnourished, sick, or has received some injury making it difficult to get to shelter or obtain enough food to maintain its body temperature.” “If unable to get to rehabilitator right away, then keep the bird in a covered box or pet carrier in a warm sheltered location until you are able to transport it to them or they are able to pick it up,” Kearns explained. She encourages people not to try to rehabilitate animals themselves. In this case, owls are protected by state and federal laws, and they are required to receive a specific type of care.Ohio drivers warned about ‘puffing’ law ahead of winter stormCity Mission seeks winter coats as cold weather strains homeless servicesTacos & Tequila Festival returns to Cleveland area this summer
