Companies Struggle with Rising AI Expenses as Token-Based Pricing Takes Hold
Artificial IntelligenceMicrosoftUber

The increasing cost of AI adoption has led to financial struggles for several companies, including Microsoft and Uber, as they navigate token-based pricing and metered-bill systems.

The mass adoption of AI by companies has led to increased expenses for many firms, with many doubting that the benefits of automation, such as improved productivity, will outweigh the costs.

Companies pay for each unit of data processed by the AI models, leading to token-based pricing. Microsoft pulled the plug on Anthropic's AI tool due to rising costs and shifted to GitHub Copilot CLI, admitting that using Anthropic's technology can be more expensive than paying human employees. Uber is facing a similar AI-related obstacle, with the ride-hailing firm having already spent its entire 2026 budget for AI coding tools in the first four months of the year.

The firm incentivized AI adoption through internal leaderboards ranking teams by their AI tool usage, but now faces the challenge of rethinking its token consumption. A Boston-based startup is also experiencing financial trouble as its AI spending has increased by 500% over the course of six months, with unchecked AI usage incurring costs of up to $100,000 before lunchtime.

Anthropic announced that starting June 15, its customers will be charged for their AI tool usage in a metered-bill system instead of a flat-rate fee
