Osaka's Eiffel Tower Outfit Sparks Controversy Over Preferential Treatment

Naomi Osaka's first-round win at the French Open is overshadowed by opponent Laura Siegemund's complaints about the time Osaka took to remove her elaborate Eiffel Tower-inspired outfit, highlighting alleged double standards in tennis.

Naomi Osaka 's French Open first-round victory on Tuesday was overshadowed by controversy surrounding her outfit and the preferential treatment she allegedly received from officials, according to her opponent.

Osaka defeated Germany's Laura Siegemund 6-3, 7-6 on Court Suzanne Lenglen, advancing to face Croatia's Donna Vekic in the second round. However, Siegemund expressed frustration not with the loss but with the time Osaka was allowed to remove her custom-made Nike outfit before the match, a design inspired by the Eiffel Tower that included a sequined gold dress over a black skirt and sleeveless beaded bodice.

While Osaka wore the full ensemble during her walk-on, she shed the outer layers before play, a process that Siegemund argued took too long compared to the strict time enforcement faced by other players. Siegemund did not criticize the outfit itself, but rather the double standard in enforcing rules.

'I couldn't care less,' she told TNT Sports. 'I come here to play tennis, not to put on a fashion show. And if others want to put on a fashion show, then they should go ahead and do it. That's totally fine with me.

I find something else problematic. In our sport, at every tournament they count every second, right up until you've unpacked your water bottle. But she can have a minute-and-a-half to change. I have a problem with that, because these rules simply exist and they are what they are - every second is now being watched so closely for us.

And I also think that with performances like these, every second should be accounted for. That's the only thing regarding the rules that I don't think is OK and where, once again, bigger names are treated differently.

' The German player's comments highlight ongoing debates about consistency in officiating and the leniency shown to top stars. Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion and former world No. 1, defended her outfit choice, describing it as couture and likening it to the sparkling Eiffel Tower at night.

'I don't really feel like it's too much of a big deal to do that and then play after,' she said. 'I could see where people would think I feel a little stressed or whatever. I think that's kind of the thing about it. Like sometimes people say athletes are, like, in show business or entertainers or whatever.

I feel like for me, grand slam walk-ons are the only time that I possibly feel like I'm an entertainer.

' The 28-year-old added that her only concern was the dress's reflectivity in the sun, joking that she feared the umpire might kick her off the court. She had two backup normal dresses ready but did not need them. The episode adds another layer to Osaka's complex relationship with the media and tennis traditions, as she continues to blend fashion with sport while navigating criticism over perceived special treatment
