A new health monitoring system installed at Temelin nuclear power plant in the Czech Republic measures turbine rotation delays down to a billionth of a second.

An upgraded monitoring system costing 10 million Czech Koruna installed at the Temelin Unit 2 nuclear power plant in the Czech Republic now measures turbine rotation accuracy to a billionth of a second.

This will help the plant monitor blade vibration even during operation, a press release said. The increasing demand for energy without carbon emissions is pushing countries towards nuclear fission technology. Unlike renewable energy technologies, nuclear fission produces energy around the clock and on demand, helping homes and industries meet their energy requirements. Although some countries, like Germany, have chosen to wind down their nuclear power facilities, others are doubling down on the technology and investing in newer approaches that can improve power plant safety while also delivering carbon-free power. Nuclear plant upgradesThe Czech Republic sources one-third of its energy demand from its nuclear power facilities. Even before its independence in 1993, the region was home to four VVER-400 units at Dukovany, which began operating between 1985-87. The Temelin power plant is relatively new and features two VVER-1000 pressurized water reactors installed at the turn of the millennium. During this period, the Czech Republic has not just operated these power plants but also used opportunities to modernize it when suitable technology is available. For instance, the reactor’s control system has been upgraded, along with a longer fuel cycle, to keep the plant running longer with less downtime. Put together, the country has invested CZK3.8 billion in these facilities, which will operate for 60 years or more, the company said earlier this year. “Although Temelín is a relatively young power plant, new technologies are always emerging,” explained Bohdan Zronek, member of the ČEZ board of directors and director of the nuclear energy division.“And if it makes sense for us from the point of view of efficiency and safety, we use them to the maximum extent. This applies to turbine diagnostics and a number of other devices.”Turbine monitoring systemA recent upgrade to the units is the monitoring system at the facility, which has been in operation for over a decade. During the recent maintenance downtime, the facility installed a new system supplied by Doosan Škoda Power, featuring sensors that precisely measure turbine spin times. The upgrade is reported to have cost the facility CZK10 million but will allow the sensors to measure the rotation time of each turbine blade to within a billionth of a second. Each turbine blade is over three feet long, and the acceleration or delay in the blade’s passage signals vibration. “Thanks to the special sensors, we can monitor whether the vibration of the blades of the last impellers is within the required limits even during operation,” said Petr Měšťan, Director of the Temelín Nuclear Power Plant, in a press release. The Czech Republic is also investing CZK407 billion to install two new APR1000 reactors near the existing units in Dukovany. To this end, it signed agreements with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power and hopes to begin construction at these sites in 2029.
