A 16-year-old was sentenced to detention after hurling a 15kg sofa from a 50ft balcony at Westfield Stratford, nearly striking shoppers below. The incident, filmed by a friend and posted online, led to arrests and highlighted the severe consequences of reckless pranks in busy public areas.

A shocking incident unfolded at Westfield shopping centre in Stratford on March 1, 2025, when a 16-year-old boy hurled a 15kg sofa from a 50ft balcony down to the busy ground floor, narrowly missing shoppers below.

The act, which was filmed by a 15-year-old friend and later posted online with the caption 'no way bro almost killed someone', quickly went viral and led to the arrest of both teenagers. Newly released CCTV footage shows the blue sofa being launched from the second floor, ricocheting off the ground mere metres away from several members of the public who jump forward in shock.

The 16-year-old perpetrator fled the scene immediately after the throw but was soon identified through the video and CCTV. The younger teen, who recorded the incident, later provided police with his friend's contact details. Both teens were charged; the 15-year-old admitted to criminal damage of the £500 sofa and recklessly causing a public nuisance. He received a 12-month referral order, a three-month doorstep curfew, and a £426 fine from Stratford Youth Court on May 20, 2025.

The 16-year-old, who threw the sofa, was given an eight-month Detention and Training Order on September 24, 2025, after also pleading guilty to the same charges. During sentencing, the court heard that the younger boy had previously been given an antisocial notice for throwing pebbles and stones from the same balcony and was barred from entering Westfield.

Prosecution lawyer Matthew Groves stated the 16-year-old 'never thought the sofa was going to hit anyone' and that he regularly engaged in pranks, including throwing objects off bridges and trains, considering it funny at the time. The sofa was described as a 'large and ungainly item' weighing 15kg, falling 50ft, and it very narrowly missed two to three shoppers on the lower level, which was still busy despite the late hour.

Defence for the 15-year-old, Nimra Ashraf, argued he was 'peer pressured' into filming by more dominant peers and had since expressed remorse, apologising to officers and assuring them he would 'never do that again'. Psychiatric reports indicated the boy had a low level of maturity, emotional dysregulation, and was susceptible to peer pressure, but he had since developed a better appreciation of risk.

A Youth Justice Service counsellor described his attitude as 'blasé', noting concerns he did not take it seriously, seeing it as a bit of fun, though he was aware of the potential for serious harm. Judge Buttar, sentencing the younger teen, emphasised the shock value of the incident in a busy London shopping centre with families and children present, even at 10.30pm.

She imposed a referral order with strict conditions, warning that failure to comply would result in immediate return to court. She accepted the boy's vulnerability to social influences but noted he still lacked emotional maturity, urging him to make amends to his father and expressing hope she would not see him again. The case highlights the dangers of reckless pranks in public spaces and the legal consequences for young offenders, including detention, fines, and orders aimed at rehabilitation
