The state auditor is investigating Medina County Auditor Anthony Capretta after accusations he spent thousands of public tax dollars on his re-election campaign.

MEDINA COUNTY, Ohio — The state auditor is investigating Medina County Auditor Anthony Capretta after accusations that he spent thousands of public tax dollars on his re-election campaign.

Commissioners said Capretta paid the photographer $2,000 a month for approximately two years. He’s also accused of using a private attorney instead of a public defender to handle his legal matters. On Wednesday, the state auditor emailed a letter to county commissioners saying it is looking into whether Capretta “recklessly failed to perform his duties” or violated state code.

The investigation comes after commissioners signed an affidavit on April 30, accusing Capretta of using taxpayer money to fund his re-election campaign. They say he used public funds to hire a personal photographer to take photos and videos that were used to promote his upcoming election.

“I’ve always had suspicions of why on earth would somebody need a private photographer,” said Thomas. “He was also apparently engaging the individual in monitor, in managing his Facebook, social media page, re-election pages and so forth,” said Stephen Hambley, Medina County commissioner. Last November’s invoice shows the photographer uploaded videos to Capretta’s YouTube channel and shot video of Capretta at Medina’s Republican headquarters. Commissioners said Capretta used those photos to produce postcards, which he mailed to Republican voters.

The state auditor’s letter says if violations were committed, a “complaint will be sent to the Attorney General to determine whether to proceed with removing the elected county auditor. ” The state auditor was initially going to issue a report on June 1, but the letter states that an extension is needed to fully investigate the allegations.
