Supermodel Yasmin Le Bon, 61, discusses her collaboration with George at Asda, embracing personal style at any age, and why supermarket fashion has become a cool, affordable treat.
At 61, Yasmin Le Bon is challenging the notion that style has an expiration date. The supermodel, who has been a fixture in the fashion industry for decades, believes her generation has refused to grow up in terms of how they dress.
I am getting older, but I am wearing exactly the same things as my daughters, who are in their thirties, as well as people in their twenties, she says. Style does not suddenly stop because you are older.
However, Le Bon acknowledges that she has to be more careful at her age. What used to be funny - doing granny chic - is not funny anymore, because I am someone's grandmother. Now I just have to be a bit more rock and roll all the time. That edge is important to me, having something a little bit undone like the khaki fringe knit top which is a really fun piece, or the brown puff sleeve babydoll dress.
Le Bon is the face of George at Asda's latest collection, which she praises for understanding that women want fashion to be joyful but wearable. The striped two-piece could easily be mistaken for an Isabel Marant two-piece, she notes. I could take that away with me on holiday but also walk down the street in London in them. The dresses have just the right amount of weight, so nothing is too see-through, but it is still light and breathable.
These are the kind of dresses to live in. The earthy palette of the collection means it is quite seasonless, which Le Bon finds very clever because she gets put off by summer clothes. It is not that I do not like bright colours sometimes - I do - but I like collections that can move through the year with you.
There are pieces I will happily wear through autumn, like the khaki jacket, which is probably my favourite piece from the whole collection, that pairs with the trousers in the same shade. They are cinched in at the ankle so they are not too billowy and boho. Le Bon also discusses embracing accessories, especially eyewear.
I have to wear glasses now because of my eyesight, and once I accepted that, I started to realise they are actually really useful - not least because they stop you frowning all the time. Glasses and sunglasses add this extra layer of mystique and coolness. They can completely change the attitude of an outfit.
You can throw on the simplest thing, like an old t-shirt or a black vest, and suddenly with the right sunglasses it feels intentional and chic. She has always loved accessories for that reason. Even though I have the tiniest ear lobes on the planet, I love a statement earring or a good gold hoop. Le Bon encourages people to break their virginity and go and shop at George, just go and shop in a supermarket.
They will realise they have still got the same head on. I think supermarket fashion has genuinely changed. You can see all the collections are becoming cooler now. It is not just, here is a white T-shirt.
You have got studded bags, little funky moments, details that feel considered. You are not going there just for knickers and vests - although, by the way, I love knickers and vests. Who does not love vests? I live in them.
But the point is you should be able to have fun. This is a really truly affordable treat. Fashion has always mattered to Le Bon because she thinks it is not a luxury, it is a need to express yourself if you have no other way to express yourself. How you dress, what earrings you desire on that day.
Even if you are just putting on a grubby old T-shirt - you still choose which one. That is a form of expression. It is joyful, or at least it should be. And finding things that work for you is difficult now because there is so much noise and so much choice.
She advises not to spend too much time looking at other people. That can become a rabbit hole, when you start comparing yourself and trying to look like someone else. I think I actually did that myself until recently, and it has taken me the past year to realise that really was not me. Undoubtedly, whatever I put on, there is always going to be somebody who thinks I look like a complete idiot.
Once you realise that, and you are happy with that, there is really no problem
