$10M boost spurs budget changes, hiring questions in Anchorage schools

After receiving roughly $10 million from the state following a special session veto override, the Anchorage School Board is expected to revise their annual budget during their first meeting of the 2025-26 school year.

The topic of hiring came up at a work session on Tuesday alongside that budget discussion. While the district said that the number of vacancies on the first day of school, 122, was lower than the year prior, Superintendent Jharrett Bryantt said the trend of high vacancies is abnormal and hopes new funding will prevent that.

“We can start hiring teachers going into next year on the normal teacher hiring cycle,” Bryantt said during the work session. “It is not normal, nor I believe should it be acceptable, that districts only had two weeks to hire these teachers.” After the veto override on Aug. 5 that led to the funding boost, the board and district allocated some of those funds towards 20 full time teaching positions in schools with large class sizes. The total cost of those 20 positions was $3.67 million of the total $10 million. During the work session on Tuesday, the district made that statement just minutes before they received an update saying all 20 positions were filled. “We made it work,” Bryantt said. “It was a difficult situation and I’m thankful that we had 45 legislators come together to make that happen. But now that we’ve invested permanently additional dollars into the BSA ... now we can start hiring earlier than ever.$2 million towards teacher retention and recruitmentAnd $540,000 towards high-dose tutoring, which would include three to four tutoring sessions a week for students The Anchorage Education Association says there is still a way to go in directing more funds towards the classroom and gave a statement to the School Board at Tuesday’s meeting. “People across Alaska have been clear,” AEA President Corey Aist said. “Parents, community members, legislators and even the governor have all said the same thing: increased public education funding should go directly into classrooms. Gov. Dunleavy said, ‘The classroom is where we can add the most value.’”100-foot tsunami peak recorded in Southeast Alaska, report saysState Fair prepares for first Cancer Screening Day
