Weird Summer Film Slate Arriving in June
Summer 2022MoviesHorror

The following summer film slate will offer an array of bizarre and memorable experiences, including horror, indie, and comedy themes. Prepare for an exciting and unpredictable summer ahead!

We know studios save the best movies for the summertime. School’s out, work slows down, and it’s just too damn hot to stay outside all the time.

What better to do than stop by the movie theater for a matinee or enjoy a date night movie on a summer night? This Summer’s slate is, without mincing words, weird—but we love weird! The blockbuster tentpoles and indie films coming out in the next three months offer a tasting menu teeming with delightfully strange stories.

Just after Memorial Day, we will see Cannes darling Renate Reinsve star in an internet-horror–inspired movie, and everything after that might make you read the synopsis twice. John Early goes full drag as a food influencer; Olivia Wilde finds her directorial voice in a chamber foursome ; Sophie Thatcher goes to hell; and oh, Anne Hathaway faces off against a dinosaur because her suburban cul-de-sac is cosmically transported into the past .

We can also expect some titles to trickle down to us fromin the coming months. I’m ready for the boisterous rollercoaster ride these bizarre flicks will undoubtedly bring us on. Here are the movies youThis A24-produced horror movie is inspired by the “Backrooms” internet phenomenon, where images of liminal spaces evolved into a collective horror mythology after the pair find common ground in their respective failures. Their brief friendship helps make it okay, until Danny steals a song Rick wrote. It’s now up to the past-his-prime wedding singer to somehow prove he wrote the boy band star’s comeback hit.

What a disaster. I’ll be seated, waiting to seeSteven Spielberg made headlines the last couple of weeks for championing “original stories,” calling out Hollywood’s recent habit of rehashing old stories and producing reboots. The legendary director’s personal contribution to this mission is, a brand-new sci-fi story probing our fears about government secrecy and aliens. John O’Connor plays a government employee-turned-whistleblower, Daniel Kellner, who has stolen critical information he intends to, well,to the public.

We’re not clear on what secrets are being exposed, but some clues include a plain-and-simple crop circle and meteorologist Margaret Fairchild speaks an alien language during a broadcast. This star-studded film is sure to be a summer blockbuster. Please, prove Hollywood wrong, Steven!while simultaneously playing Nick Tosches, an author living in modern-day New York City.

A mob boss tasks Tosches, an expert on Dante, to steal the original handwritten copy of the, a clear comparison between the two worlds that indicts today’s greedy society. We’re not sure how this will play out—but, Isaac is joined by a cast that includes Jason Mamoa, Gerard Butler, Sabrina Impacciatore, Martin Scorsese, John Malkovich, Gal Gadot, and Al Pacino. John Early’s directorial debut is undoubtedly going to polarize audiences with its ludicrous premise.

Early stars, in drag, as Maddie Ralph, an aspiring vegetarian food influencer who suddenly becomes a star after her video editor husband helps her post a cooking video. It catapults her to fame—but she’s hiding a secret when her success reignites her previously squashed eating disorder. Likely collaborators Kate Berlant and Connor O’Malley come in to add some laughs for Early, but this Sirkian drama is somewhat touching, as Early explores Maddie’s arc with deadpan seriousness and a great deal of care for her—and her secret. Hugh Jackman really does it all, from singing showtunes to being an action movie star. On the heels of the kids’ movie, showing us his unrivaled range.

This rendition of the Prince of Thieves story is much, much darker than anything we’ve seen before. Instead of the altruistic hero we know and love, Robin Hood lived a life of crime, known only for murder and theft. The movie follows the aging bandit as he grapples with his wrongdoing and seeks redemption .

A supporting cast includes Murray Bartlett, Noah Jupe, and Jodie Comer. , on TV, in films, and behind closed doors. Olivia Wilde asks this question in her surprisingly refreshing and brutally honest chamber drama,). It stars Wilde and Seth Rogan as Joe and Angela, a viciously toxic couple who contribute equally to the misery of their marriage.

One evening, they invite their neighbors, Pina and Hawk , over to dinner. One thing leads to the next, and the hip couple invites Joe and Angela to partake in a sex party. This proposition unfurls all the beautiful and ugly parts of the couple’s relationship within the pressure cooker of their San Francisco apartment. It’s wildly entertaining and proves you don’t need much more than good acting and robust dialogue to keep the audience’s attention.

, one of my all-time favorite movies, which she wrote. Maxine touches down in France just in time for Paris Fashion Week, tapped by a fashion house to film their runway show, a task that is upended when she receives a devastating breast cancer diagnosis .

Like much of Winocour’s other films, this story promises to grapple with the tumultuous emotions that accompany such a diagnosis and to examine the fallout. Likewise, it’s no surprise the director also weaves in two supplementary storylines, following a young South Sudanese model played by Anyier Anei and an aspiring writer played by Ella Rumpf. We expect you’ll cry .

Spanish filmmaker Carla Simón excavated the painful memory of her mother’s death as a result of AIDS with her debut,, or “pilgrimage” in English. Marina Piñeiro is an 18-year-old girl who travels to Vigo, Spain, to reconnect with her birthfather’s family . What she needs is a signature from her grandparents in order to qualify for a university scholarship.

However, she discovers much of what of what her adoptive parents told her about her birth family is untrue. Simón’s third film is an affecting reflection on loss and generational trauma, packed with magical realism and cemented by Garcia’s spectacular debut performance. Fierce competitors on the court; lifelong friends in daily life: Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert shared one of the most intense bonds in sports history.

The two tennis legends represented polar opposites in the sport; Evert was the picture of cool composure, while Navratilova dominated the court with fierce play. Yet, the rivalry never jeopardized the friendship as the two vied for the top spot in the ’70s and ’80s. This bond only strengthened when both players received a cancer diagnosis. Netflix’s new documentary dives into their shared story in the upcoming heartfelt documentary.

, embarks on telling the ancient Greek legend of Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, and his treacherous quest to return to his wife, Penelope. Who better to play these two than Nolan alums Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway? The star-studded cast includes Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, Lupita Nyong’o , and Mia Goth .

So far, all the movie stills and teasers indicate that Nolan intends to have some fun interpreting the text . But for the purists, don’t worry, Nolan’suntil a leaky heart killed him for 25 minutes, as he just revealed at Cannes. This near-death experience inspired him to rethink his career, and the resulting picture is, which follows Elle, played by scream queen Sophie Thatcher, as she traverses a metropolitan hellscape .

Reports from Cannes reveal the movie isn’t really tethered to any real story, but Elle is a famous actress with daddy issues and a psychosexual relationship with her stepmother . Charles Melton is in hell, too, as a GI looking for his daughter. Oh, and apparently, a demon known as the Leather Man is on the loose.

It seems like a story akin to David Lynch’s psychological nightmares, but we’re waiting to see if Refn can pull off his brush with death. An erotically charged, neon-soaked, cross-generational comedy-thriller, with Olivia Wilde as Erika Tracy, a professional provocateur who disillusioned with Gen Z’s sex-negative attitudes. Naturally, she hires a bright-eyed Gen-Z assistant, Elliot , and the relationship slowly evolves into something more. Classic.

Araki’s return to form features Charli XCX, Daveed Diggs, Mason Gooding, and Chase Sui Wonders. One thing is certain: time has not tampered down Araki’s horny tendencies. Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, will undoubtedly lure audiences to theaters. Eindbinder plays Kris, a young queer filmmaker whose indie film might likely feature in Sundance’s programming .

Despite being an unlikely candidate for franchise filmmaker, Kris is tapped to revive a. The director’s vision hinges on bringing back the original final girl, now a reclusive ex-actress, played by Anderson. This relationship drifts into surreal territory raise their two children in suburban paradise. But the peace is disrupted when the family begins to notice abnormalities in the neighborhood.

We don’t know much, but these are some of the irregularities we see on the trailer: McGregor looking astonished, if not anguished, while holding a match; Hathaway holding a rifle with a terrified look on her face; the two of them clutching each other in front of a cosmic portal; and also… dinosaurs. David Robert Mitchell, of, directed this movie, but it’s the producer who might yield the most clues about the plot: J.J.

Abrams . The cartoon coyote temporarily gives up his pursuit of Roadrunner; instead, setting his sights on the ACME corporation. It’s time for retribution , so Wile E. Coyote hires a penniless billboard lawyer played by Will Forte to sue.

Dave Green’swhen it premiered at Sundance earlier this year. Billed as a chaotic road movie, the movie looks like it falls smack dab between. It follows the two titular shitheads, played by Dave Franco and O’Shea Jackson, who are hired to transport a rich kid to rehab.

The other “idiots” involved are Kiernan Shipka’s stripper Irina, Killer Mike’s pastor William Armstrong, and Nicholas Braun’s Pricka Bush Da Werewoof, a SoundCloud rapper . Peter Dinklage also plays a gun-toting militant of some sort. Unfortunately, this movie looks fun, so we’ll see what this road drama entails.
