The opposition against Austin ISD's turnaround plan proposal is intensifying as parents, students, and teachers continue to voice concerns regarding the possibility of 13 school closures and redefinitions of most boundaries.
The opposition against Austin ISD's turnaround plan proposal is heating up across the community as parents, students, and teachers continue to push back on the possibility of closing 13 schools in the district and redefining most of the boundaries.
A new organization, 'Let's Get It Right AISD', is working to get the board of trustees to delay the Nov. 20 vote to November 2026. ahead of 10 school closures at the end of the school year, a move district leaders say is meant to better align feeder patterns and strengthen neighborhood schools.
Monday’s meeting at McCallum High School was the first in a series of community meetings on proposed boundary changes before the district votes on the plan in September. The boundary changes would take effect in August 2027.and declining enrollment. The district is working to relocate students from those campuses into new schools for next year, and officials say boundary changes are intended to help manage shifting enrollment and relieve campuses expected to take in more students.
“We understand these changes are hard, they’re personal, and they’re not just administrative shifts,” said Raechel French, the district’s director of planning. Austin PTA President Crystal Brothwell said parents see the need for difficult decisions as the district reshapes campuses and attendance zones. Ali Ghilarducci, Austin ISD’s senior executive director of communications and community engagement, said the district believes boundary adjustments can help students stay with their peers and attend schools with stable enrollment.
“We do see it as something that will benefit students to be able to stay with their peers, to be attending schools that have a healthy thigh student population so that they’re getting all of the opportunities that they deserve,” Ghilarducci said. Some parents raised concerns about the timeline and process, particularly those preparing for their child’s school to close. District officials did not present a set map outlining potential boundary changes at Monday’s meeting.
Brothwell said boundary changes could help spread out the influx of students moving to new schools and address overcrowding.
“Without having those boundary changes, we have campuses that are over capacity because they should have originally been moved with that boundary change to a new homeschool,” Brothwell said.
