Austin ISD Superintendent Mike Segura requests trustees to halt further school closure plans, emphasizing districtwide boundary adjustments to improve feeder patterns and student stability. The district aims to stabilize its budget, boost enrollment, and advance the 2022 Bond program, with community meetings starting May 11.
This comes at a time where 10 AISD schools are set to close at the end of the school year. Segura told trustees Thursday night at a board meeting that he has concerns about the district moving forward with additional school closure plans this year.
"By narrowing our focus to districtwide boundary work, we can continue working toward building aligned feeder patterns and strengthening neighborhood schools while limiting continued disruptions," Segura said in the letter. "These aligned patterns offer an opportunity to build communities, improve programmatic alignment, and reduce the number of times a student cohort splits into different schools. Ultimately, this work maximizes our resources and strengthens the academic experience across Austin ISD.
" Segura stated that the goal is to prioritize student achievement, particularly at schools with state-approved Turnaround Plans. The district is working to stabilize the budget, and is aiming to put extra focus on enrollment initiatives and executing the next steps of the 2022 Bond program. The district will host Kick-off meetings starting May 11 to share the proposed process, timeline and engagement opportunities followed by location-specific meetings in June.
