A recent survey by the University of New Hampshire has found little change in the Maine Democratic primary race since February, with Shenna Bellows Platner and Senator Susan Collins remaining neck and neck.
A recent survey conducted by the University of New Hampshire indicates a tight race in the Maine Democratic primary between Senator Susan Collins and challenger Shenna Bellows Platner .
The poll found that 51% of likely general election voters would support Platner if the election were held today, compared to 42% for Collins. This is a relatively stable result, as the survey indicates little change in the race since February, before former Gov. Janet Mills dropped out of the contest. Despite her withdrawal, Mills is still expected to appear on the June 9 primary ballot.
However, Rep. Jake Auchincloss has declined to support Platner's campaign, citing controversy surrounding a tattoo he said resembled a Nazi symbol. Platner has also faced criticism over resurfaced posts that included comments about sexual assault and alcohol consumption, which drew accusations of sexism after they reemerged last year. The poll surveyed 1,397 Maine residents from Thursday through Monday and carries a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points.
The results suggest a competitive primary, with 6% of voters remaining undecided and 2% indicating support for another candidate
