Through the Living Shoreline Technical Assistance Program, the MSU Extension is expecting to give more than 100 free site assessments this year.

BILOXI, Miss. -The Mississippi State University Extension Service has upcoming workshops to advocate for the growth of living shorelines . Camp Wilkes in Biloxi is one example of a living shoreline- they are an alternative option to bulkheads or seawalls that instead use native marsh grasses to prevent erosion.

Through the Living Shoreline Technical Assistance Program, the MSU Extension is expecting to give more than 100 free site assessments this year.MSU Coastal Marine Extension Director Eric Sparks says the option is gaining popularity because of the benefits. ”These living shorelines provide an alternative that not only provides a lot of environmental benefits like habitat for fish and water quality improvements, but they are overall more resilient to storms, they last longer, and they are generally cheaper to install. Usually, you don’t have to go back and keep rebuilding them,” Sparks says. With the Living Shorelines Technical Assistance Program, property owners can also receive shoreline design and permitting support.Man attacked by a bobcat while turkey huntingVideo shows part of high-speed chase in Mobile that ended in Mississippi
