DOTHAN, Ala. -A Dothan man accused of killing his wife, then reporting her missing, is making a second attempt to secure a lower bond which, if successful, would likely free him from jail while he awaits trial on murder charges.
Since his February 25 arrest, authorities have held Stephen Miller on $1.5 million bail, with a Houston County judge rejecting his first plea to reduce bond. In the latest effort, attorney David Harrison argued that his client should be granted a bond ranging between $15,000 and $150,000, citing an Alabama Supreme Court ruling. Dothan Police charged Miller, 64, with killing his 57-year-old wife, Gloria, at their Halls Mill Road home, dumping her body under a bridge, and then reporting her missing.During the first hearing, Desiree Kelly, Gloria Miller’s daughter, took the stand. She testified that living with her mother was hard over the years, claiming that she could become “unhinged.” Kelly also said that her mother was the aggressor in many situations towards Miller Sr., and that her stepfather “never” got angry. However, after hearing Dothan police investigator Corporal Scott Spivey described how Miller tried to cover his tracks by dumping evidence in a shopping center parking lot Judge Benjamin Lewis refused to lower the $1.5 million bond, citing the “violent” nature of the allegations. Spivey admitted Stephen and Gloria had a tumultuous marriage, testifying that within one year, there were 10 police reports of domestic disputes between the couple. On the day of the murder, the couple got into a fight, with Gloria scratching her husband, before he pushed her into a dresser and strangled her, according to Cpl. Spivey. Following the crime, Miller Sr. turned off the security cameras around their home before moving the body, the officer testified. Since that hearing, grand jurors indicted Miller, who had worked the same job for 40 years before his arrest. Judge Lewis, the district judge who denied bond at the first hearing, no longer presides over the case since grand jurors sent the case to circuit court where Judge Kevin Moulton presides. Miller pleaded not guilty, with his trial date pending and no hearing was immediately set on the second bond reduction request.and receive the latest local news and weather straight to your email every morning.
