SAN ANTONIO - “Vaping devices are not allowed in our schools,” Barry Perez the assistant superintendent for communications with Northside ISD said.The entire toilet is removed to fix it.“So what we have had to do last year is to the tune of about $180,000 contract out a specific service for individuals to come in and help us clear those lines,” Perez said.“It is costing taxpayer money now that students are making these choices,” Perez said.“Students who are found in violation of or found in possession of those vape devices are subject to alternative school placement,” Perez said. But vaping isn't just about the costly toilet problem. City Council Member John Courage is proposing banning new vape shops from opening 1,000 feet from school campuses. "Vaping has become so much more prevalent, particularly in our schools, somewhat in middle school but much more so in high school," Courage said.Perez says parents and students need to know and the flushing needs to stop, he also says the district has documented around 700 vaping incidents this year compared to around 730 Two years ago around the same time. We reached out to other districts and they told us it's not as much of an issue for them.
