A plane crash ed at Sonoma Valley Airport late Wednesday afternoon, injuring two people, officials said. At 4:19 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the crash at 23980 Arnold Drive, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office.
The plane crashed while coming into the airport and was traveling from the Auburn Municipal Airport, said Mike Mulas, chief of Schell-Vista Fire Protection District. Three people were inside the plane at the time of the crash. One was airlifted to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, one was transported via ambulance to Queen of the Valley Hospital and the third was released on scene, Mulas said. The Sonoma Valley Airport, otherwise known as the Schellville Airport, is in Sonoma.
The airport is privately owned but available for public use and home to many vintage aircraft. Officials said the incident was confined to the airport. The plane ended up in a field next to the runway. The airport is a popular destination for aviation enthusiasts and hosts various events throughout the year.
The incident is currently under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board. The cause of the crash is still unknown and officials are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The airport has been closed temporarily while the investigation is ongoing
