Latest openings blend global inspiration with neighborhood charm

San Francisco’s latest bar and restaurant openings blend global inspiration with neighborhood charm, with Indonesian street food and a reimagined Southern diner among the offerings. The Green Heron When Hobson’s Choice closed in the upper Haight, the neighborhood lost a well-loved watering hole.

Now, the Green Heron attempts to fill the void. The team behind the Red Tail beer-and-wine bar on Irving Street is updating the space and is excited to work with a full liquor license. Classic libations such as martinis and old fashioneds will be on the menu, along with rum punches that pay homage to Hobson’s Choice. While it’s not a dive, The Green Heron will mimic Hobson’s laid-back vibe and offer something for everyone, including Miller Lites and shot and beer deals. The HallLooking for a new nightlife experience in the Mission? Head to The Hall, a recently opened bar with eight pool tables, craft cocktails such as lychee mai tais and negronis with black sesame-infused gin, and dishes taking their cues from cuisines around the world. Think yuca fries, tandoori chicken skewers, and brigadeiros.Chicken Fried PalaceEarlier this year, chef Seth Stowaway made the difficult decision to close Osito, his wood-fired fine-dining destination. However, he’s not giving up cooking — he’s planning to open Chicken Fried Palace by the end of the year. The eatery in the Mission will be a modern interpretation of a Southern diner, a West Coast-style waffle house with dishes such as chicken-fried steak with gravy, meatloaf sandwiches, buttermilk-brined fried chicken, and boozy milkshakes. Sate and SotoThe Market Street food hall Saluhall is excited to welcome its newest vendor, Sate and Soto. The concept is from chef Morsinah Katimin, a La Cocina graduate specializing in the traditional flavors of Indonesian cuisine. Other items include tempeh and tofu fries, as well as rice cakes wrapped in banana leaf and slow-cooked. Sangria and SaltCha Cha Cha in the Mission, another longtime favorite, has been reborn as Sangria and Salt. The 140-foot bar has been restored, and chef Jonathan Young has expanded the menu. Food offerings include a wide range of tapas such as crab cakes and patatas bravas; pastas such as seafood fettuccine and ropa vieja pappardelle; and entrees such as guava-barbecued chicken and lechon asado. The famed Cajun shrimp that Cha Cha Cha was known for is still available, along with plenty of creative cocktails and — of course — sangria. BoscoThe restaurant space at Airbnb’s headquarters, formerly occupied by Bellota, is now Bosco. An Italian-forest-inspired concept from chefs Ryan McIlwraith and Kaili Hill, Bosco offers freshly baked bread pulled from the wood-fired oven; arancini, golden on the outside and molten on the inside; and thick tangles of bucatini slathered in pecorino and black pepper. The pastas are made in house right before guests arrive, and the cocktail program is elevated and complementary to the cuisine. PolentaPolenta, a soon-to-be-opened restaurant in Hayes Valley, will showcase the Northern Italian area of Friuli. Giulio de Monte Gaspardo, a sommelier who formerly worked at Bottega, is behind the eatery. The restaurant will feature dishes native to the region, which borders Slovenia and Austria. Thus, expect Italian cuisine with Eastern European influences, accompanied by an extensive wine list featuring interesting imported labels.
