ANCHORAGE, Alaska - State Sen. Matt Claman , D-Anchorage, announced Thursday that his pick for Lieutenant Governor is Sarah Skeel , Providence Alaska Medical Center’s chief administrative officer.
“I truly believe that almost everything I’ve done in my own history in healthcare certainly applies to this because healthcare is not without challenges,” Skeel told Alaska’s News Source Thursday before her announcement. , is a born and raised Alaskan who received her master’s degree in social work from the University of Alaska Anchorage. Skeel has been the CAO for Providence since 2023 but has worked at the medical center for eight years in various roles, according to her LinkedIn.
She is a licensed clinical social worker in the State of Alaska and has worked in the healthcare industry for 18 years. Claman said he tapped her for the role for just that experience and “to have somebody with her experience in a senior position in the administration will be, I think, a big plus. ”“ a microcosm of running a city or a state,” she said on her qualifications for office.
“I think the state has done some work, but it’s certainly in a place where we need some leadership to move things forward and in my history, to build programs, to expand them and to lean into being innovative, it really takes community engagement and starting with the relationships and connections that we have to be able to execute on that. ”Current Gov. Mike Dunleavy, R-Alaska, is term-limited and will leave office come January.
