Peak was a city planner who entered politics and was twice elected mayor of San Antonio. His signal achievement was the trail system that bears his name.
Howard W. Peak , an urban planner who served two terms as mayor of San Antonio and launched what grew into an extensive network of walking and bicycling trails that bears his name, has died. Peak's family informed Mayor Ron Nirenberg's office of the death Saturday night. Peak was about a month shy of his 76th birthday. He began laying the groundwork for what would become his signal achievement in the 1990s.
When a group of environmentally-minded people first organized to advance ballot propositions for the greenway trails and protection of the Edwards Aquifer, Peak 'decided he would work on the trail system and I would work on the aquifer protection as far as promoting it,' Conner said. “That was a real highlight of my life,” she said. 'We were thrilled when they both passed.' Lynda Billa Burke, a former San Antonio councilwoman, said Peak died Saturday in a local care facility.
