Celebrating four decades of success, legendary reggae artist Shaggy is set to release his new album ' Lottery '. Meanwhile, rising star Lu City is making waves in the pop and hip-hop scenes with a unique Saint Lucian twist.
Ziggy Marley, son of the late reggae icon Bob Marley, is back with his first solo album in eight years, 'Brightside'. The album is a reflection of Marley's personal growth and musical evolution. Runkus, a Caribbean artist known for his genre-blurring projects, has released a new album titled 'Lottery'. The album, which features collaborations with stars like Naomi Cowan and Chronixx, explores the malleability of Caribbean music through a blend of different genres.
Runkus, who took a break from music to focus on production and art, scored the album himself, treating it as a cinematic collection of songs. The album's cover features a sculpture by Bahamian-born, New York-based multidisciplinary visual artist Tavares Strachan. Runkus is also preparing a live performance video series, filmed in the hills of Jamaica. The series will feature acoustic renditions and Rastafari chants, produced by Kadiya McDonald and Carleene Samuels.
Runkus' new album emerged from a recording process that produced over 170 songs. The album feels particularly cinematic in its mix and sequence, reflecting Runkus' love for film. He draws inspiration from greats like Quincy Jones and Babyface, and even compares himself to Lee 'Scratch' Perry in his approach to scoring music. The opening track of the album juxtaposes an astronomy talk at Occidental College with the classic 'Punany' dancehall riddim, demonstrating Runkus' unique approach to music.
Rastafari principles guide Runkus' songwriting, with self-exploration and exemplification being key themes. The album is a personal journey for Runkus, who centers himself and his experiences in his songwriting. Despite being a mostly solo affair, the album features a collaboration with Sean Paul on the track 'Sure as the Sun'
